Someone got a good deal on a 1930s Cavanagh Boater. Probably a 7 1/4, so a really, really good deal.

Tango Yankee said:This Stetson Stratoliner went for less than I would have thought considering the condition and size (7 1/4), and the fact it's got pretty much everything: the box, the Stratoliner membership card, the pin, and inspection slip. All that for only $222.50!
Cheers,
Tom
The more I have noodled about this I think that TWA got nervous about the fact that there were only six Stratoliner planes in their fleet and all of those were on long-term contract to the USAAF for use as transports during the war. I surmise that it was TWA that moved Stetson away from this pin and to the DC-3 pin. That's why you see the other pins in Stetson's print ads from the 1942-45 period.ScottF said:Stunning - that answers a few questions regarding the pin; however, I still think the pin might have changed over the years.

Mario said:Just won this 6 7/8 Mallory Ten in dark gray/charcoal with maroon colored ribbon and nice wide edge binding (I'm still on the roll) in matching color. Seems to be in absolutely immaculate condition without any stains or moth nibbles. At $129, this is by far the most expensive vintage hat I bought off the 'Bay. Quite substantial sum considering that it's a 6 7/8, but I somehow figured that the price would go pretty high on this one. I mean, just look at it! Brim is 2 3/4", crown rises 4 1/2" (creased). Original Mallory box is also included.
The seller dated the hat to the 1960s, but to me it looks more like 1950's. What do you think?

I´d also put it 50ies rather than later.
Bantam Man said:About the dating question: I do wonder if selling a hat for US$ 10 was still feasible in the 1960s?
Bantam Man said:Myself I did just win this Adam (http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130338409358&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT), also with a contrasting rustbrown or copper ribbon. With my head on the snug side of 7 1/4 LO, I usually do not risk ending up with a too tight 7 1/8. But this colour combination, I could not let go. [huh] So I hope it will fit.

I was watching (did not bid) that one just because I liked the look of it.
Mario said:Yeah, there was an amazing leap from $36.50 to $126.56. My max bid was $156.
