This Stetson Stratoliner went for less than I would have thought considering the condition and size (7 1/4), and the fact it's got pretty much everything: the box, the Stratoliner membership card, the pin, and inspection slip. All that for only $222.50!

Cheers,
Tom

Stunning - that answers a few questions regarding the pin; however, I still think the pin might have changed over the years

The more I have noodled about this I think that TWA got nervous about the fact that there were only six Stratoliner planes in their fleet and all of those were on long-term contract to the USAAF for use as transports during the war. I surmise that it was TWA that moved Stetson away from this pin and to the DC-3 pin. That's why you see the other pins in Stetson's print ads from the 1942-45 period.

BTW, this is the first "Stratoliner Club" card I've ever seen. I have the certificate and the bronze and silver medallions in my collection, but not the card. If I had the cash (and a smaller noggin), I would have bought this hat just for the box and collateral items!

Mallory Ten

Just won this 6 7/8 Mallory Ten in dark gray/charcoal with maroon colored ribbon and nice wide edge binding (I'm still on the roll) in matching color. Seems to be in absolutely immaculate condition without any stains or moth nibbles. At $129, this is by far the most expensive vintage hat I bought off the 'Bay. Quite substantial sum considering that it's a 6 7/8, but I somehow figured that the price would go pretty high on this one. I mean, just look at it! Brim is 2 3/4", crown rises 4 1/2" (creased). Original Mallory box is also included.

The seller dated the hat to the 1960s, but to me it looks more like 1950's. What do you think?

Nice score Mario. And good sniping...just one second out and there with the biggest $$.

I was watching (did not bid) that one just because I liked the look of it.

:eusa_clap Mario, Wonderful hat! :eusa_clap I love the ribbon*

About the dating question: I do wonder if selling a hat for US$ 10 was still feasible in the 1960s?

Bartenders, coming from a German the word Dreispitz's exclamation is appropriate, but it would not be if a Dutchman like Djgo or me would use it... ;)

*) Myself I did just win this Adam (http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130338409358&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT), also with a contrasting rustbrown or copper ribbon. With my head on the snug side of 7 1/4 LO, I usually do not risk ending up with a too tight 7 1/8. But this colour combination, I could not let go. [huh] So I hope it will fit.

Rather not. Definitely not in this quality.

Mario -

Congratulations!

:eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

It fits right in with the rest of your hat "family". On the dating, I believe that the liner states "Established 1823", which puts it pre-1946 when Stetson bought the company. One of the experts on dating can confirm or refute.

I was watching that hat but had already reached my purchase limit , its a beautifull hat wear it with pride my friend.
Cheers Peter.

Hah! The purchase limit...hah! What a joke! :p

About two weeks ago, I loudly announced that I'll step back from making purchases for at least few weeks... That was quite a mouthful, and I failed miserably! Bought three hats in that time.

Me, I'll be feeding on dry bread and clear water 'till christmas comes 'round!
