Thanks Diner. $50 would have been a serious bit of noggin furniture back in the 60s. What makes you peg it then?
the box looks earlier to me but that doesn't mean much.

Ha! Tell me about it! At least I can be proud to say that I've managed to refrain from buying hats for the best part of the month - but in all honesty, that's not only because I wanted to save some money, it's also due to a lack of opportunity...

That happens, and thank God for it. There will be weeks and weeks sometimes with no good hats in my size and then, POW!; one day there'll be ten of 'em that I put on my watch list. :D

The 7X and the 7X clear are two different creatures and should not be confused.
I don't have it in my hands to be certain or a shot of the whole sweatband. I may be wrong but am doubtful that Stetson simultaneously made both a clear 7X and another 7X that is different. The post Philadelphia 70's-80's hats are a different story and obviously most recently 7X are only a straw designation.
The tag style, upgraded sweatband and gold crest and original seller argue for a Philadelphia made hat. I'll have to wait to verify.

That tag was used for years after the Philly plant closed, on Stevens, Stetsons and Resistols.
You are ignoring the box, the store that sold it and the liner crest. Here's another that sold last month, same sweat details similar liner crest(but with some color)same box and tag. It doesn't say clear on the liner but does on the sweat.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280368617036#ht_822wt_1167

While similar in shape and size this 60's Stetson tag is not the same as that used on Stevens and later Hatco models. I do have examples before me at home.

Well, I had the high bid on an almost new Banjo Patterson in Heritage Fawn and it did not meet its reserve. However, I did ask the guy what he would take if it did not sell and viola, we struck a deal. One guy here has been a sounding board and so with maybe a little prodding, I went for it.

My worries are that the BP is a western hat, not like my Stetson Saxon at all. I have big ribbons on the Saxon and the panama bob hat I bought, so this thin, leather-like band could be offputting. Also, the brim appears to be wider than the Saxon. However, I have the Saxon in grey and it will be my suit hat. I am envisioning the BP though to go with jeans and khakis, and also dress pants and sweaters, so as to be more versatile.

Has anyone switched out the small band for a larger ribbon one? What is the price on something like that?

Stetson 7X with 60's square black size tag and gold liner crest and sweat with adjust ribbon like 100's. From Liechtenstein's of Corpus Christie whose sale in 1972 nearly coincided with the demise of the real Stetson(Philadelphia).

I believe hatco address 7x and 7x clear beaver a few months ago. Based on an interview with an old time Stetson factory worker 7X and 5X used 100 % beaver. The clear beaver hats used of non-dyed beaver from the under belly. The following is from my memory of hatco’s post
I have three 7X clear and one 7X. The newer of my 7X clear is closer to my 7X than the older 7X clear beaver felt. Also the 7X has a westerner style stiff brim. Generally Stetson quality varied over the years but I would not say it is a completely linear move to lesser quality as the years process but the progress had valleys and pinnacles with time periods of special hats and better quality depending on felt sources[/QUOTE]

I've owned 7 7x clear beavers, dating from the early 1940s to the mid 1960s and one 7x post clear beaver.

There haven't been two that have been identical in terms of felt. Some thick, some thin, some stiff, some clay-like pliable.

The 70s 7x wasn't even up to the quality of a '50s Royal Stetson.

This hat is probably near the borderline, I'll have to wait and see. Since Liechtensteins was sold and rebranded in 1972 thats the latest it could be.
