The Nationalist Myth, War and "Vintage"

Isn't that the truth? But you'd be hard pressed to find someone at the gas station who knew that, especially in the younger generations who only have grandparents that experienced the war. According to Hollywood, America was a group of rowdy young men who fought and died in a bloody war, but...

The Nationalist Myth, War and "Vintage"

I'm sure some of us remember America in 2003, with whoops and hollering and cheering for the flag, changing "French Fries" to "Freedom fries", getting teary eyed during the National Anthem, buying drinks for soldiers, all that business. The narrative across the nation was that America entered...

The Nationalist Myth, War and "Vintage"

I'll admit, it was a bit hamfisted on my part. There's certainly no direct link, and a sociologist or social psychologist would probably say there was a weak correlation if any was found at all. On the other hand, I could only quote so much of the passage without getting a little tedious and as...

The Nationalist Myth, War and "Vintage"

Have you ever wondered why a sub-group of people would be so interested in a time in world history underlined for its brutality; i.e. WWII? Have you ever wondered why modern culture has suddenly taken to "vintage" clothing and ocassionally pines for "the good old days"? I wonder these things...

    Prohibition

Yes. And the Capones of today are reaping billions while governments spend millions so they can stand around a crop of ditch weed with stupid grins and a can of gasoline. If one of these Capones is collared, there's another 20 willing to take his/her place. Almost seems futile...

    Moments of Doubt...

Wow, congrats on the 'stache! I can't grow an acceptably normal looking one, so I have to stick to handlebars and such. I think the pencil mustache can be pretty cool when done right.

    The safest state to live

If the doped up maniacs don't run at that sound, they will when the police arrive. That's actually a pretty fantastic idea! (Just make sure you have some hot round for when the animals try to get in the front door, too!)

    The safest state to live

If anyone wants the honest shakedown on this... ...police would rather not file reports. The more reports they file, the worse their district looks. Bad district = higher quotas, less funding, harder work, etc. I've detailed elsewhere on the lounge the multiple incidents where I have...

    Moments of Doubt...

This has been my experience, also. From the common "bag man" to the well-to-do folks. They're often correct on the era of my clothing, too. The missus and I appreciate it immensely. It always beats the, "Are you in a play?" comments we receive everywhere else.

All You Need to Know About Hat Etiquette

I don't think you're on the fringe. I think that's a pretty reasonable default for anyone that either is not aware of etiquette, or finds vintage etiquette, well, vintage. Although I may try my best to keep to the rules, no one notices because they don't even know such rules exist. I do so...

Was there a thread about gay interest advertising on the Lounge? I must have missed that. Was it taken down?

    Retro, sexist ads...

Feraud, awesome post, thank you! I think it's interesting to compare the two sets objectively and out of context. The difference is one is modest, the other pervasive. Such would be the difference in a sexual harrasment case; i.e. it's one thing to make an inappropriate joke, it's another...

All You Need to Know About Hat Etiquette

First of all, see this thread: All You Need to Know About Hat Etiquette I don't see anything wrong with the full list of etiquette. I think one can fudge here and there, but there are reasons for each point and given a little thought, they tend to make sense. I think the difference...

    Retro, sexist ads...

Some of those are obviously over the top, but others don't seem unreasonable, and a little light-hearted. I don't know that I like the tone of the commentator. I can't decided if the person who wrote this article is actually being serious, or if they are truly an ignorant sap trying to...

Aging beautifully and gracefully, then vs now: Who did it better?

If there's one thing (of so many) I can't stand, it's hearing about old men getting boners on a schedule and chasing their wives around. If that's your life, fine; but good god man, don't broadcast it. If I had my way, I'd melt the Viagra commercial reels down into rubber bands. Those...

    The safest state to live

Welcome to Des Moines folks! Safest city in the Union! (Please limit your visit to a 3 mile stretch of Fleur Drive, and well-lit areas of Grand and Locust Avenues during the day, weekdays and on the west side of the river, downtown only. Keep all hands and objects inside your vehicle at all...

Aging beautifully and gracefully, then vs now: Who did it better?

I look at hair dye like blood pressure medication: some people need it as they age, others don't, but it's not something one should do out of boredom (pink hair, green hair, etc). To me, it's like makeup - a lady shouldn't feel guilty for dying her hair anymore than using cosmetics, but a little...

    Price of Gas

When the missus and I were choosing an apartment, we specifically chose our apartment because it had no AC, was walking distance to work and used radiant steam heat. I don't care what political party is in office - they are all the same in the US when it comes to oil. Whether we tap our...
