*L* Are you saying I look like a biker or a stripper? ;) Just kidding, although it's funny... My mother always accuses me of dressing like Exclusive Brethren or Amish, and I've had people on the street ask me if I'm a conservative Jew. Once I happened to wear a headscarf and someone thought...
Well, I certainly did. Mine are all in areas that aren't hugely affected by age, or are not easily seen. I grew up with people with tattoos, and was under no illusion that they would remain clear, smooth, and attractive as I got older - I took aging into consideration at the time, and am still...
I agree with you in principle, but should confess that I got my first tattoo at 15 and am still happy with it. (Er, yes, NZ law does state that you must 18 to legally get a tattoo...)
I can't quite believe that a bit of metal or some ink in your skin can be as scary or demeaning...
My step-father was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1952. As a child, he lived for a while in Victorian terraced (row) housing, and the toilet wasn't even in the building. It was a communal toilet (possibly not a flushing one?), down at the end of the street. If I recall correctly, they may...
Having seen (filled, washed, stacked) a million bar glasses, I have to go against the consensus and say that the first design looks more like a commercial bar/pub glass, and would work better to play up the "virtual bar" theme of the Fedora Lounge. :)
Just my token input, since I'm not keen...
What a great thread! :)
Unfortunately, I left the few hats I had with a friend while I was overseas, and she let her 2 year old play with them and throw then in the dressup box. Needless to say, they are now shapeless lumps of felt and feather. I'd love to find more, but they just...
New Zealand was no Germany, but things were pretty harsh by all accounts.
For the Pakeha (white) population, most of them worked in agriculture or in an industry affected by it. When the Depression hit, exports were affected, which was bad news for the individual, and for the domestic...
I don't personally find it attractive (in fact, it's sometimes creepy to think of what it looks like when you take the plug out!), but it's not something that makes my head turn and my nose wrinkle when I see it out in public. (But then, apart from boys with their pants belted below the hips...
Thanks for a very reasonable view of the situation, Brad. :) Even though I have a few tattoos myself, I can fully understand your view - even the telephone numbers. :p
I guess my view on piercings is a) in most situations, piercings are made to be seen, and I prefer my tattoos to be...
Patent leather is that leather that has a very shiny, almost plastic-coated look to it. It's not the kind you polish up with bootblack. :)
I guess patent leather hair is hair that's shiny and slicked-back to look smooth and almost solid?
Like a friend of mine said, in an injured tone...
Hi, Scotrace, welcome in! :) Glad to have input from the mens' quarter; I just put the thread in here because it started off with kitchen appliances, which seemed a girly sort of a thing. ;)
Thanks everyone, for the links and ideas. :) Some great info in there.
I'm renting right now...
I agree tattoos can look awful, especially "fashionable" ones that have novelty value at the time, but look out of place as one ages (not to mention dating you to a particular fad or trend!). It's especially true on women, partially because of people's perceptions, but also big colourful...
Well, on one level, I agree with you. Standards of courtesy have certainly, regrettably, fallen over the past 50 years. :( Often nowadays I try to be polite to some people, and they look at me strangely, as though I'm uptight or OCD. :p Some even ask me who the Hel I think I am, putting on...
I recently managed to buy, on sale, a vintage-looking enamelled colander (pale "hospital" green) and retro kitchen scales (lemon yellow). Now I'm wondering about how to tie in other things with my emerging vintage kitchen.
What colours were popular at the time? I'm particularly interested...
Well, I know nothing about mens' hair, and not much about bristles, but I do have a suggestion...
Try not putting the brush on your scalp the whole time. That is, brush away madly (as you do) to deal to your scalp and any knots or cowlicks. When it comes to styling, brush close to the scalp...
Yeah. :) What she said, but without the Dorm.
I barely have time to dress in jeans and t-shirt and put on eyebrow pencil and mascara in the morning, let alone a full hairstyle and makeup. Too busy coaxing a pre-schooler to eat and dress, before running for the bus. :p
Er, yes, but I'd...
As late as 1968 my mother was wearing shoes mended with car tyres, and was teased mercilessly for it. I applaud those who can make do with little, but it's not something I would actively choose.
*L* An entire year? I rarely have a lipstick last less then a year... :p
Here in NZ they were...
