    Anyone ever try Ryler Stylers?

I have some, they work okay. I prefer the look of fingerwaves though. Ryler stylers make the same kind of waves as waving irons, but they seem kinda 2 dimensional to me. Still they are easier to do by yourself than fingerwaves.

    1911 Niagara Falls, New York

My dad grew up in Niagara falls so he remembers some of the freezes. I've been on every Niagara tour possible, Maid of the Mist, the caves behind the falls, over the falls in a helicopter, boat tour of the whirlpool, etc. My dad used to play there as a kid, apparently he is lucky to be alive...

    Thrift Stores or Flea Markets

I've been to these: I didn't find too much in the way of clothes or shoes there for me, some victorian stuff, but your best bet for clothes is the Vintage Fabric Expo at the Santa Monica Civic which is a few times a year: http://www.vintageexpo.com/press.htm There are thrift stores...

Moving to LA: yay or nay?

Los Feliz is pretty nice, it is where the Derby is located. It is a hilly area with some nice homes and the usual grungy apartments. A pretty good neighborhood, can be expensive, slightly trendy, (known for a small wealthy gay community). If you can afford the area you'd probably be...

    Gaining/maintaining weight? Slowing down metabolism?

I am another one who used to be thin and gained a lot of weight. However, after I hit 30 or so it was my thyroid that stopped working right. I used to get accused of anorexia and bulimia my friends, especially if I lost a little weight while I was in my teen and 20's. You said you got your...

Moving to LA: yay or nay?

Burbank isn't horrible, it just isn't the most attractive community. There are some cute older buildings, houses, churches and the like, but then there's this: http://www.marilyncarolyn.com/burbanked.htm Personally I see the entire valley as a tacky mid-Century wasteland with occasional...

Buy New, Vintage or Victorian Home?

My current Edwardian shack is probably one of those that needs to be bulldozed. Although it was NOT built to last, so it will probably fall down eventually and save my landlady the trouble of razing it. It was cute, but it's getting on my nerves, and since I am renting, I can't remodel...

Moving to LA: yay or nay?

Dressing up in LA depends on what area. I was in Best Buy in Torrance the other day, and I was wearing what I had worn to work that day, glen plaid slacks and a camel sweater, and I noticed that I was the best dressed in the store. Mostly everyone was wearing sweats or or jeans and...

    Cute Vintage-y Shoes

Yes, those are very cute! I posted one or two of those at full price a while back in some other thread, but on sale they are even better. I just happened to order the Hugo's (wide heel oxfords) recently. Can't wait to get them since I hate all of my work shoes at the moment. Anyway, with...

    Travel clothing suggestions

Well then there's me who managed to sprain my ankle in Paris on their cobblestones. I was even wearing walking shoes! Ugly ones too (well they are super comfortable). My stupid ankle still hurts sometimes, especially if I try to wear heels for more than 10 minutes. All the same, that...

    Travel clothing suggestions

I find that you have to pack a lot of clothes for a cruise. There are the shorts or playsuits and bathing suits for day in the Bahamas, or in your case Puerto Rico. Sundresses are good, and you can put a jacket or sweater over them to go to places like the Vatican. Then you have to dress...

    Man barred for showing belly

This guy needs longer shirts. The problem is that it is rude to tell someone, especially a stranger to wear a longer shirt. End of story.

Edwardian dress, where to wear it?

Well for Edwardian clothes, there is the opportunity to find vintage reenactments, like teas and balls. It seems more evening to me, so any evening event is a possibility (well teas might be okay, but not so much in summer since it's black). I used to know a guy from SF who wore Victorian...

Which Historical Lunatic Are You? (quiz)

I am so jealous that you got Tesla, Les Gillis: I got this one: You are Charles VI of France, also known as Charles the Mad or Charles the Well-Beloved! A fine, amiable and dreamy young man, skilled in horsemanship and archery, you were also from a long line of dribbling madmen. King...

Neighbors against Habitat for Humanity Project

Well I did a bit of checking, and the average price of homes has been dropping in Marin. It went from $950,000 to about $850,000 in the last year and a half. All the same you get a lot better house for your $850,000 in Marin than you do in many areas. All the same I don't think that their...

Neighbors against Habitat for Humanity Project

Oh come on, they want to build four little houses and 3 big ones. I think the problem the residents have is that the "wrong sort of people" might move in. You know--ones without mid-six figure incomes. This confirms my suspicion that Marin county is one of the snobbiest places on earth. The...

    Prices: Then and now

The only reason you could have live in servants 100 years ago is that there were homeless 12-14 year olds who needed room and board. Or, homeless adults with no skills or education, who needed room and board, which was a large part of their salary. A tailor made okay money (but probably...

    Cats Make Lousy Cooks

So charming, almost as good as my mom's cat. She showed up last year with a live baby bunny. Who screamed it's head off before my mom let it go. What's next the neighbor's chihuahua?

    Cats Make Lousy Cooks

I'll say cats make lousy cooks, the only thing mine makes is raw lizard mincemeat. Blech! At least she hasn't progressed to mammals.
