They've been plugging this at the Beeb for ages and now it's finally coming on! Is it available simutaneously over the other side of the pond?

    1940's England

Not your usual 'fillums' but we like to spend rainy afternoons in our house watching some of the excellent GPO films of the 30's and 40's. They are a brilliant slice of Britain of the period. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_U3yF3vFYo The Fairy Of The Phone is great too...

    picture request: Far From Heaven

I went to see this film on my own as my husband refused to watch such a 'girls' film so I sat there on my own with a large box of chocs surrounded by pensioners and it was marvellous! When Julianne Moore finds her husband with his male lover (not actually doing anything!) and the penny drops...

    Call the Midwife - BBC

That's a lovely story Mike, she must have been one amazing woman. I'm not sure they make 'em like that any more - mores the pity!

    Call the Midwife - BBC

It's easy to forget that Workhouses are not that far in the past. The maternity hospital I was born in was previously a workhouse. The series has touched on the workhouse mentality quite a bit - the brother and sister who lived as a couple in the first series had been in one too. About 20...

    The Porch Life

British homes don't have porches but I wish we did. Every time I see them in films I just think..I wish I had one of those....

    Call the Midwife - BBC

We have a Christmas special airing over here on Christmas day - including the lovely Chummy! You may be able to see it online. The books the series is based on are excellent by the way (it's based on real life events). There's a great bit in the first book about the Spanish mother with 12+...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

An unusual choice V.C. - do you have connections in this neck of the woods? I don't know if you have heard but after the recent report confirming the police cover up, etc. the original inquests have been quoshed today. There will be new inquests and hopefully prosecutions. Justice at last.

    Sculpture Pin Curler

Thnks Tishkaminx! Well, it does certainly work! My only try so far (due to time) was quite messy but it was quite easy and the curls were very curly. I did have a bit of a panic brushing it out so I'll need practice on that bit. No pics I'm afraid, maybe next time!

Inside the tunnels of Washington’s mole man, Harrison G. Dyar

We have a similar thing over here in Liverpool - The Williamson Tunnels. www.williamsontunnels.co.uk The guy who built them was known as The Mole Of Edge Hill (an area of Liverpool) and no-one knows why he had them built. He paid men who had just come back from the Napoleonic Wars to build...

WEIRD stuff from the golden era

Yup. Aparantly it was all the rage in the 30' and 40's!

WEIRD stuff from the golden era

Asbestos used for everything. Hiding from air raids under the stairs. Having all your teeth removed for your 21st birthday then having a nice new set of gnashers to replace them. Never being allowed to learn to swim because of the danger of contracting polio. Going deaf through measles. TB...

    Best Night cream?

The best cleanser I use is plain almond oil with the hot cloth method. I have very dry skin but work in a grubby environment so get blackheads. It works wonders, is soothing, and because of the hot flannel, it steams my skin clean too. An no horrible additives either. I then use a bit of...

    Sculpture Pin Curler

Well, my Sculpture Pin Curler has arrived - very quick too considering it was from the other side of the world! I haven't tried it yet but will let you know how I get on. By the way, is this a remodel of an original product or is it new? Obviously the syling of the box is very 'vintage' and the...

That lamp has a very 1930's look to me Mr Badger, it's the cut of her dress. My grandma had a similar figure years ago. What's the cable and plug like?

    Guess What Year I Am!

I'd say 1938, the year most of the gasmasks were given out just after the Munich crisis. Place? Hmmmm Singapore? Doesn't look like mainland Europe.
