I think perhaps it depends on the thickness of the original sole. I have a pair of 40's shoes and the soles are a much thicker and more robust leather than my modern leather soled equivalents. The leather on the uppers is much heavier than anything today too, they have held their shape superbly...
Miss Golightly, you have such a stunning wardrobe! When are you going to post pictures of you wearing all the lovely things you show us only on mannequins? I long to see them on a real person!
Personally, I would never use rubber soles on leather soled shoes, especially vintage ones - that is the advice I was given years ago. They are too heavy, upset the balance of the shoe and can cause the uppers to pull away from the sole. Maybe your shoe repairer can put on a leather version?
I use that, and also 'fabuloso' a lot. Fabuloso is Polari, I think.
I taught a young man a couple of years ago who's entire vocabulary seemed to start with F and end in K, especially when being 'dismissive of his peers'. I tried to convince him to be a little more creative with his rebuttals...
Yikes! It looks like a primitive 'baby cage' for naughtly little ones, is that what you are going to use it for? Where did you get it by the way, Id've thought they must be very rare. Most people would have been glad to get rid of the post-war and I don't think they would have had many...
Hey, lay off Atonement! I find Kiera Knightly as irritating as most of you seem to but there's really nothing better on a rainy evening when you are all alone and feeling a bit sorry for yourself than a lovely 2hr sob fest.
Spartacus has the same effect, I cry for hours every time I watch the...
The last word on larger feet: I used to work at a specialist shoe fitters and we did ladies shoes up to a UK 12.5 - that's about a US 14.5!Princess Diana bought from us occasionally (she was a very slim size 9).
Not all of our customers were ladies however...
Ahh, thank you vitanola. Iwas a bit wary of meths in case it just stripped the surface off completely! If it is indeed shellac, what do you mean by 'restore'? If it softens with meths, can I just lightly wipe the meths over to reflow and blend in the flakey bits?
I guess what I'm asking is, can...
Gladiator.
I personally like it when the main character dies as it shows the writer or director has guts, LA Confidential is a great example. Like Edward I always feel cheated when they tack an artificial 'happy' ending on.
Atonement makes me howl for day, however. My husband hates it when I...
I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this, but I do like the Revlon 'Just Bitten' range. The have two reds: flame which is a bright red and Gothic, which is a lot more intense. The thing I like about the whole range is that it's a very good lipstain and stays on for hours without drying...
I've a sneaking feeling that there may be no shortcuts here, I may need to strip the smaller items and revarnish and leave the others be!
I might get some tung oil or similar and give it a go on a less noticable part of the larger peices.
Thanks MPicciotto and tonyb. I have never heard of tung oil before, what is it usually used for?
The current finish is probably/definitely varnish, and given the age of the furniture I'd imagine it's not polyurathane. I wasn't sure if I'd have to sand the old stuff off and start from scratch (I...

I have several peices of Utility furniture including wardrobes, tallboy, dressing table and a side table. They are all oak veneer and I love them all, but the varnish has started to dry out and look a bit flakey and patchy in areas. I don't want to strip the finish off, mainly because it'd be a...
Your machine looks identical to mine! I bought mine from an old lady who used to do alterations and used it for sewing heavy denim. I originally bought it (for £10!) as I needed to repair the handle on a crocodile handbag - which it sewed through, along with two other layers of leather - like...
