Hey, Johnny, regarding the E cap would there be any change in price to have a fabric sweatband and/or have the cap made to my specific head circumference? Also, how much more would a wool tweed cost?
Looking over that coat, a few things come to my attention:
1. Is that an inverted box pleat (in the usual place) on the back? That could be good.
2. How could a wool coat be "machine washable"? That doesn't sound right.
What say, everyone?
I don't think that's what we're talking about in this thread. The Campdraft has a 2&7/8" snap-brim. If the edge gets a .25" upturn all around, that leaves a remainder of at least 2.5", which may or may not have been wide enough for Brian Niebuhr's preference, which is what I'm asking him.
Maybe it's just an odd camera angle or lighting position but, the brim on that looks to me like an aussie or western flange, not a snap-brim.
Do you think it was shorter than 2.5"? Another question: How will being a long oval encourage the brim to stay in the position I want? Is that the...
Yeah, I might consider trimming it if the edge-curl idea won't work. I like the idea of having a homburg-type brim-edge on a wide-brim fedora though. I already have a panama like that. However, its brim doesn't really have a sharp up-snap in the back. I'll probably bring the panama to the...
I was thinking of getting an Akubra Campdraft but might want the brim width to be 2.5" rather than the 2&7/8" that it comes with. What might be the result if I had an old-time professional hatter put a 1/4" curl on the brim? Would the ability for it to snap be gone? If I have to have it...
The fedora's flange is what allows its brim to be snapped. The flange of the homburg gives its brim a shape that can't be snapped. The brim of my homburg is actually just as soft as a fedora's.
My interest in felt hats started with homburgs. I've never thought of them as stiff hats. The quintessential homburg, to me, is as soft as a fedora and, I see no reason for the style to be stiff. Bowlers originally had a reason to be stiff, if what I've read about those is accurate. Maybe...
The red lining is probably a tradition for fisherman caps that are made in Greece. I've owned several of these caps over the past 25 years and the lining in them has always been that same red.
I'd think that any kind of protective treatment would negate the wool's natural ability to ventilate. Might as well be wearing a rubber slicker - then your sweat-inducing headgear would be attached.
I wouldn't think snow would merit a rain cover for a wool or furfelt hat. I wear my FF hat even in the rain without covering them. I wear all kinds of wool clothes out in the elements and haven't experienced any shrinkage. Don't see why a wool hat would be any different.
Current makers of off-the-shelf Long Oval hats?
What companies offer a Long Oval shape? Bonus if they offer an Extra-Long Oval.
Even if it's special-request rather than off-the-shelf, would be welcome in this thread.
Love that Double Duty. The buttons on the belt have me curious though. Do they serve some kind of adjustment purpose?
Ian, I look forward to your take on the cuffs and back of your drifter.
Felt is better than nothing but, I'll probably be wearing mine only during the colder half of the year, now that I have a nicely-vented panama. When I went away on vacation, at the end of July, I took an old boonie since I didn't have the panama yet. It's humid where I live, which becomes...
Cavy/guinea-pig felt?
In South American countries such as Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador, the cavy, known locally as 'cuy', is a popular source of protein. Since furfelt hats happen to be popular headwear in those countries, it seems that cavy pelt would be an obvious construction material. Yet I...
I received my first panama (too late for my vacation, unfortunately). I went with a sub-fino, for now, because functionality was my primary reason for getting it. Overall I'm happy with it. Relative to other panamas I've handled, this seems to be fairly soft in the reed area. I ordered it...
