    Re-blocking to Long Oval.

Would it be a good idea to order a hat with a dimensional brim (e.g. Akubra Fed IV) but, have the retailer reblock it to a Long Oval? I recently received my first panama. The retailer specially blocked it as Long Oval at my request. That made the brim shorter in front/back by approx .25". So...

    Pike Mennonite Dress Hat

The form of German spoken by Amish is referred to as Pennsylvania Dutch. The Amish community is also sometimes referred to as Pennsylvania Dutch, which is probably where AdamH got "Dutch" from. Another name oddity is a particular Amish hatshop called "Irishtown Hats". It's funny to see...

    Panama Hat Thread

Fantastic, thanks. I wasn't needing for it to last beyond my lifetime anyway. When I receive it, I'll go ahead and wear it without any special treatment.

    Panama Hat Thread

Are there any treatments, oil-based or otherwise, that help prevent a panama from getting brittle? I'm currenty awaiting my first panama ever. Would like to keep it in good condition, especially if I can't prevent it from getting rained on.

I don't own one that I like very much. If I could have any jacket, it would probably be this one:

    Fun brief article

I agree with the author of the article. I too have noticed people recently railing against guys who wear (or even have ever worn) "fedoras". "If you have ever worn a fedora, don't even consider contacting me" is a direct quote that I found. As someone trying to wear functional attire, I'm...

Scotch Guard? Scout Felt Hat Protector?

If the leather sweatband in one of my hats ever does shrink, I will probably re-saturate it with water and then stretch it back.

    Cool story..hats in the news

I seem to fall in the upper middle-brow. I do currently wear military/hunting clothes along with my felt hat but, I think I get a pass for them not being camo. At least they're USA-made (and hopefully not in a sweatshop), which is more than even many self-classified highbrows can say about...

Scotch Guard? Scout Felt Hat Protector?

The hood on a rain slicker is waterproof. If you substituted that for your furfelt fedora, you'd likely notice sweat developing before long.

Scotch Guard? Scout Felt Hat Protector?

I hope fur felt isn't waterproof. One of the draws of felt, for me, is that it's breathable, like a sweater or wool socks. I perceived that it was, at least. I wear my Akubra outside in the rain and all is good. Any garment that's waterproof is also sweat-inducing, which in turn can stink.

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

How do you search for non-runner-end suspenders? Nearly everything I find happen to be runner-end. The one current production suspender I can find that has the ends I'm looking for, Welch brand, gets bad reviews on Amazon.

    Akubra in the news

I hear you, Fedoracentric. I should clarify that I'm not questioning what anyone has said about felt used in some Akubra hats. I'm just curious if anyone knows the answer to my question. It would be nice to know how the different qualities of felt are achieved.

    Akubra in the news

The one Akubra I have, the Sydney, uses a very fine, smooth, supple felt. Does anyone know how its composition or application, differs from the felt being discussed in this thread?

    Recommendation for homburg brim trim?

Mike Miller / NorthwestHats.com can do that, as well as a really authentic homburg brim binding (ask for the half-blind stitch).

    Let's see your mechanical watches

Well before I discovered the Fedora Lounge, I'd been looking to get a mechanical watch. Not out of a desire for vintage style but for utility. I don't think I ever found anything suitable. What companies currently make mechanical watches? Are there any that stay below the jewelry (Rolex...

    BRACES (SUSPENDERS)

Thanks for that, HBK. Before your distinction, I couldn't figure out what 'runner end' referred to at all so, what you've just said shows that the other person didn't know what they were talking about. Does anyone have a term for the 'work' type that HBK posted an image of? Those are a...
