Grüß Gott! I'll just add my "welcome" to the pile: you will enjoy your time here, and there are many, many folks who know the answer to just about anything you might want to ask. Keine Angst: dein Englisch ist total verstehbar! Und glaube viel besser als mein Deutsch.... I was in your lovely...

    What Games Amuse you

Dear CH, we have similar tastes and, sadly, similar fates: I've always loved games--or, should say, the concept of games! An only child with parents who didn't care for games....and married, like yourself, to a wife who doesn't either. She's a good sport; we manage to play a game or two a...

    The Great Beer Thread

Not a bad brew at all....Negra Modelo is a favorite when in Mexico...or eating that way here; most of the popular Mexican beers available up here are yellow water, as far as I'm concerned (but that, of course, is a matter of taste literally and figuratively); I wonder if anyone out there has...

    Gaulish Hair

Welll.....I'm not a classicist, but I'm lucky enough to number an excellent one among my friends...his interests are broad, and frequently involve the more day-to-day aspects of the past. So I sent him the URL for this thread with the comment "well, the things you find in the strangest places!"...

Michael Jackson Dead at age 50

And, in an odd way, I think this relatively early death is something of a blessing: his trajectory was tragedy, graphed: straight up, and then a slalom ride down. This puts an end to the decline. Had he lived....longer....it's difficult not to imagine him ending up in prison on a morals charge...

What would you serve as the best local food?

Thanks, SV: yes, we're still one of the lucky ones. There's a family farm just up the road in West Newbury, for instance: the real deal, 2 brothers and a sister work it. But, sadly, they don't put in corn. Yes, we can still get to the farm stand...others are not so lucky. "Skeet"

What would you serve as the best local food?

And I know I speak for SubVet in thanking you for the thought! But I think your farmer friend is quite right: one of the reasons the old varieties tasted better was...they were bred for taste...not staying power. It's wonderful--in a way--to be able to have basil or tomatoes or whatever any time...

What would you serve as the best local food?

Well...that's what I meant....while I couldn't be certain your farm stand experience was in Massachusetts...I know you are (as am I)...so I thought it was a good bet. I guess I'll be looking for Silver Queen myself, now... And, it looks like it isn't (or wasn't) an entirely New-England thing...

    Am I Too Old?

:offtopic: but: I get the point, but I really wonder whether there isn't a large section of our society today that attempts to AVOID real experience at all costs...honestly, IMHO, this is a major thread in modern society. Jean Shepherd, that amazingly prescient social commentator, was onto this...

    The Great Beer Thread

Welcome, VC! But prepare yourself: you've probably just touched a very raw nerve among beer lovers (most of us think the PROBLEM with much of the beer available in America, at least, is that...it's too smooth and not bitter). Sadly, it's probably the "cheap stuff" that fits your description...

    Am I Too Old?

I don't think we actually disagree, LD; I too am a strong believer in the old "Seven Ages of Man" thing....and agree with you that much of the deformation of our current culture is the result of late childhood/young adulthood being accepted as the cultural norm...for everybody. And (to respond...

    Am I Too Old?

Another comment from across the aisle.... Dear Ladies of the Lounge, Another gent with a comment; it's only based on my own experience, both mine, and of many people I have had the pleasure of knowing. Physical age means NOTHING. Physical age will probably bring a certain amount of physical...
