Bond, do you use a block, band block, or stretch block for sizing and making a good foot? It seems it would be difficult to do without at least one of these.
I did rebuild my first hat with just my head and a stretch block for sizing, but I found I it very unsatisfactory in terms of the foot...
Those complicated devices look like tippers, with swing down arms for the dents. The others look like a sort of band block. The smaller device can't clearly be seen. Maybe a sizer or cutter of some kind?
Crude Oil in this context was exactly that as far as I can tell, although some references I found in old insurance books speak of the use of "mineral oil," which was a slightly more refined product.
