To this day you can not walk though the front door of the New York Athletic Club wearing jeans. You have to use the service entrance just as you do when wearing workout gear. I once had a 'moment' with JFK jr when we found ourselves riding up to the men's locker room in the back service...
Serge is a great choice for a travel suit as it's very wrinkle resistant. Even the lighter stuff drapes well due to the weave. But if you love a nice handle it's probably not for you. You know how women get touchy feely when you wear lux cloth; well you won't have to worry about that with serge.
The heel issue is something I've encountered a few times with brands at the high end of the shoe pyramid. I think that it's something that happens and is difficult for quallity control to spot. The wonky welt stitching is another story; totally inexcusable.
I just recently handled a few pairs at Brooks Brothers and they looked pretty good. Maybe they were from a higher line. Before then I hadn't handled any for several years.
I had a similar jacket but in cotton. It had barrel cuffs and flaps on the pockets. Same back with a functional box pleat. It was from Abercrombie & Fitch circa 1960

OK so fast forward a few pages and we find that there is leather and ribbon (silk) of comparable quality to be had today albeit at a price that hatters don't wish to pay. So how about the felt? Today's 100 % beaver no match for that of the golden era?
