I'd slap a medium width silver grosgrain ribbon with an Indy style bow and matching edge binding on that. I can see it in my mind's eye. Maybe a charcoal grey treatment, instead. Nice hat!

IP- Thank you for your compliment. I've been addicted to modifying things all my life. Even fedoras.
Ed- I, too, used to think color came about when I was born. Thank you for your kind appreciation. The actual caps they wore were wool, and had 8 panels, but I've got two on order from...
Okay. Fedoras rule, but caps are tops, too. With a photograph of an actual 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron cap worn by the pilots of F-86 Sabre jets in the Korean War, I made some modifications to a contemporary unstructured yellow cotton twill cap I picked up for a few bucks. The black "39"...
Bumping this for the heck of it. Just to clarify my present, and recently enduring, crew cap fixation. I've recently re-done one of my caps and made two others in the process. Pics will follow soon.

Never tried RIT dye on a hat, I only wanted to tint the campaign hat, and the coffee seemed more manageable. I remember thinking that RIT might have been simply too strong. J.T. Marcus has done some dye jobs, I think, perhaps he could interject here again. Just found this thread...
I wondered when this would come up. Yes, it's true, I used coffee on a campaign hat to shift it from grey to a tawny shade, but found that the coffee, when it dried it would cause "collection stains" at areas in the felt where the coffee in suspension in the water collected when it dried...
Careful viewing of these Youtube samplings from the film will give you brief glimpses on the crown of the hat, so you can pause it at the right moment. Initially, the glimpses I got were a typical hand pressed inner crown, you can see it pretty well after the guy gives him the pistol in the...
