Thanks, Tommy. I've been watching a bunch of old B&W films from the 40s lately, and have been enjoying the seeing such a wide variety of highly individualistic creases and brim shaping.
My guess would be this is a hand bash Moreover the crown height in the advertisement looks much, much lower than on the hat work by Karns.
As an aside, many of the old Stetson ads (Whippet, Playboy, etc.) show crown heights that appear (to my eye, at least) notably lower than the height...
I've always wondered why the custom amongst orthodox Jews who wear fedoras seems to be to wear it very high on the head. It looks as if they fit their hats one or even two sizes smaller than is typical amongst non-orthodox fedora wearers. Any insight into this, Aaron?
I concur with all the above commenters that the fit looks perfect for you. I like your second scenario with the Sheene collar and hand warmer pockets. Personally, I couldn't live without them. And I think brown would be a good color for you. Adds a bit of (visual) warmth. Good luck, and enjoy!
Hate you, no. Envy you, yes! Great looking jacket. Yup, got those Vanson extra-long sleeves. As far as the wife going to kill you, well, in my experience more likely it's gonna COST you. Do the math: (Vanson X 2) + Johnson = ( Surely there's something she wants ...) ;)
Those samples are cool. Now that you mentioned it, I realize the one I tried on at Vanson's factory (without gusseted shoulders) was the Arrow, made of midnight leather. The Raider is nicer, in my opinion. I'm envious of your new find. You scored big time!
I just found your exact jacket (I think) in a Vanson catalog from year 2000, which I have as a PDF file (228 pages!). It looks like it's part of their "Boulevard" series, which features some pretty cool Vanson models that we don't see very often. I'm not sure if it will solve the mystery of the...
I took mine to a laundromat and ran it in the dryer set to lowest heat setting for a couple hours. It helped ... some ... but they're pretty tough. I'm afraid it takes a couple of years of frequent wear.
The fit looks spot on perfect! You couldn't have done better if it had been custom made for you. Regarding break-in, they used a different leather for this model than they do for their MC jackets. Thick, but softer, no break-in required. I believe it's called Firenze leather. I have dark blue...
Really nice jacket. I was out at the Vanson factory last year and tried on one of these. (Almost bought it, but ended up getting something custom instead.) They had a few left over in stock, but they only make them on a special order basis nowadays. I recall that the ones they had were called...
