I used to bring a golf umbrella for frequent breaks from the sun while bass fishing in my friend's boat. He used to look at me, shake his head and mumble, "I can't believe I'm stuck bass fishing with Mary Poppins." LOL!

The Asher does show up now at J.J.Hat Center (under new arrivals) and it is indeed listed as '100% natural woven hemp'. I wish it came with a longer brim. I like the idea though. I'll have to see what the Stratoliner looks like.

I'm certainly not a specialist, but I think what they mean is, the body was woven in Ecuador and blocked (shaped) in Italy. I assume that finishing would also include ribbon, sweat band, etc. I see plenty of Panama hats that are hand woven in Ecuador, but listed as made in USA and also Mexico...
Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried that right off, but I needed too much of it and it became uncomfortable. It didn't look right or feel right. So, I'm taking one more shot at getting the correct one. They are sending a smaller size. Hopefully I'll report back with good news.

I really never knew what 'usual' is for me. I never measured or bought a hat that is sized before. I ordered a 59 and it was wrong because of me. I now realize that I am a 58. I believe the hat was correct. I fashioned their measuring device that I printed and set it to 59 and it fit on me like...
Yes, I got it. I explained it on the last page of this thread (307). It was way too big. I called to return it and they gave me the option of another hat. I told them how I didn't want to risk more shipping charges and that I was going to limit my loss by returning it for a refund. William was...
I did get my Havana Panama hat from Panama Hats Direct today. I'd have to classify the process as a bust. Casey delivered the correct hat and in a short time frame too. It's exactly as advertised and pictured, the quality of the weave seems very good (blocking/shaping is OK), but it's just too...
I wish I could go there, but I'm not in NY. I did really enjoy all of Kevin's YouTube videos on shaping hats. That's how I learned to shape my grandfather's hat when I first found it.

Tropicalbob, thanks for the tip on this product. Never heard of them. I checked them out and I like what I see. If my Panama order doesn't work out, I think I'll consider their 2 1/2 inch tear drop, fine palm. Had I not ordered what's coming, I probably would be ordering from them already.

I'm waiting for a super fino Havana Panama hat from Panama Hats Direct. I guess it's somewhere between Fl. and WI. today. It might get here today. I consider the entire thing rather 'iffy'. If I get it and love it, great. If it's not at all what I ordered or if it never shows up at all, that's...
Yes, same with me. Mine was deleted from the catalog after I ordered too. Then later, I got the emails that I described earlier. So if the specific hat that I ordered was available and deleted after I ordered, I wonder why they are not able to find a hat that fits my order? Curious indeed. Let...
I don't know whether it's a lack of in house communication (since I was told different things by two different people), poor organization or the run around. I just know there is no telling if that list of stock hats can be relied on.
HA! Had a look at Lawless Denim on Yelp. Some tough reviews...
I feel obliged to share my PHD experience so far, since you are asking about this, especially regarding the order page that has finished, in stock hats (supposedly). I did order from that page recently and I was led to believe that I was ordering a finished hat that was in stock, on the shelf...
Wow, sorry to hear about that. I hope you can get the whole situation straightened out. I know it will cost a lot of time in the process though. I'm waiting on a Panama hat order and wonder if I'll even get it at this point, let alone whether or not it will survive shipping in good shape.

That is quite a handsome hat. Great piece of work. Just curious, what are you playing in your avatar image? I play the ukulele and mandolin, so it caught my eye.
Andy
Wow, Dave, fantastic job of shaping the straw. I like them both. If my current order with Panama Hats direct goes south (it might and pardon the pun), I might look into that first Bailey.

I know first hand how satisfying it can be to find your grandfather's hat and be able to wear it. Great looking hat. Fantastic work by Tom Gomez. Congrats on the find. Enjoy!

What do they hit you with for shipping to Kyoto? Yeah, shipping is a bit high, considering I once shipped a camera lens from the US to Australia for only 22 bucks!
