When a repro maker finally produces an A-1 with the small pockets of an original (also minding that A-1s did not have the elegantly sculpted pocket flaps of the A-2) I will be first in line with my wallet out. Eastman comes preety close but still no cigar.
Upland Trading Company is on my girlfriend's block, which is also the block that about half of TAXI DRIVER was filmed on. Owned by a really nice old feller. He carries Filson and Barbour products as well.
I own a pair of "the Saxon" shoes by Florsheim, and in a bizarre coincidence, I wore them this very afternoon. I bought them in practically deadstock condition and they wear like a dream. Thank you eBay.
Like BT mentioned, there was an older British or Canadian zipper maker called Aero. I've seen several jackets from the 50's/60's with Aero zips.
Currently Aero uses YKK zippers stamped "Aero" on the front of the puller with their civilian jackets. At least this is what Amanda told me when I...
They're made by Wrangler Europe, who've vastly improved their products in the last few years. They're actually better made than the Wrangler Japan stuff Edwin puts out, which is shocking.
Good stuff.
I'm not especially crazy either filmed version (or BONNIE AND CLYDE for that matter), but the book is great. Stark and poetic. Anderson's other book, HUNGRY MEN, is also a tremendous read.
Unfortunately the true paradox of the modern well-dressed man is that in this now uber-slobby world we live in, a well-dressed man is often assumed to be a to-be-avoided eccentric, a blatant attention-seeker, or a flamboyant homosexual.
If the repairs needed only amount to restitching then an expert can easily repair it.
Is this an old Aero of Beacon, NY jacket or an Aero of Scotland jacket?
Either way, Aero of Scotland offer an excellent repair service, they take extreme pains to restitch using only the original holes.
Though Chippewa and Red Wing are now both owned by Justin, I'd give the slight edge to Red Wing, in general. Chippewa makes a very nice engineer's boot.
That said, as much as I love modern Red Wings (I wear them on a near daily basis), I recently bought a pair of deadstock with tags 1950's Big...
The funny thing about Eastmans, Aeros, or McCoy's being passed off as originals is that often an original can be had for less than the price of a premium repro (that is, unless you are a size 46 or above).
