Nice jacket, G&T. They've closed a few Goodwill stores here in Toronto, for some reason. There's still lots of thrift stores about, however. Here's a few recent finds:
A small Deco period creamer by H & K:

A middle eastern themed bowl from the '20's, in great shape, by the...
I've been rather remiss in posting images of new scarf rescues but on viewing the striking new finds on this thread I realize I must change my ways.
All my scarves are found at local thrift stores or church rummage sales (primarily the former). They never cost more than $3 Cdn and the best...
One hundred years ago today, the Germans unleashed a cloud of chlorine gas, for the first time on the Western Front, on French positions near Ypres. Confronted by this horror, the French units fell apart and withdrew. Canadian troops of the 1st Canadian Division, which was on the French right...
Just completed David Grann's "The Lost City of Z". Quite the descriptions of the perils of exploring the Amazon! Good read.
Still working through White Devil about Roger's raid on St. Francis.
White Devil by Stephen Brumwell. It's an account of the raid by Rogers and his rangers on St. Francis in 1759. Quite interesting so far. 'White Devil' was the Abenaki name for Rogers and apparently still is.
Pardon my French, sheeplady, but who the hell would think that cancer was a great gift? Morons. I too get tired of strangers who feel compelled to engage you in a discussion of a personal nature. I find I am becoming more and more intolerant of this kind of nonsense. I dislike being rude but...
I've read most of Smith's books. Always enjoyed the ones set in South Africa. I particularly enjoy his Egyptian series...just picked up Desert God and started reading it today.
We've had a very similar winter, Lizzie. Coldest February in history up here. I managed to get by with an old polar fleece vest and an old Eddie Bauer rain shell from a thrift store. Nothing like a bit of layering! Now if I only had a decent pair of boots...even duck shoes. The melt water...
This is one of my few 'hot button' issues so I usually remain mute on the subject. Using corporal punishment on young people is, for me, a sure sign of incompetence. It is never...ever...an option. I've had lots of experience dealing with misbehaving teens...35 years as a teacher in an...
Tried watching the pilot episode of Dig. Didn't last long...it was a bit like watching paint dry. I ended up tuning in an old episode of Burn Notice instead. Wasn't that much of an improvement. Gave up...reading a book instead.
Really lucky find at a thrift store: George Witton's Scapegoats of the Empire. It's the only first hand account of the Bushveldt Carabineers in the Boer War. Not being particularly flattering to the empire, it was suppressed when first published in 1907. Witton was one of the defendants...
Just finished 'The Franklin conspiracy' by J. B. Latta. Pseudo-history at its worst...but highly entertaining. Love authors who twist themselves into knots trying to create mystery and conspiracy. This one was almost as amusing as von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods, but he only hints at...
Absolutely. Everything Chandler wrote was excellent! Wish he wrote more. I enjoyed The Long Goodbye most. Now, I'll have to wait awhile to let my slipshod memory fade and then read them all again.
Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom (2012). How Anderson managed to have a cast of such terrific actors, like Ed Norton, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and Harvey Keitel, step back and allow the two young actors to shine is amazing. Thoroughly charming, beautifully...
I'm a big fan of savoury pies, so once in a while I'll whip up a steak and kidney pie or a French Canadian Tourtierre (using my mother's old recipe). Mmmmmmh.
This one's a tourtierre:
I've been looking for The High Window and The Lady in the Lake by Raymond Chandler and finally found both today in an omnibus edition at a thrift store. So it's The High Window for me right now...that man could write.
I recently discovered that Chandler joined the Canadian Army in World War...
I missed it last week, but CBC is replaying the pilot tonight. Watching it now. It's not my usual fare but it looks quite well done.
I've been the the site of Camp X...the training camp for spies and the source of the title for the show. Though quite the secret location at the time, it's...
You did, indeed, have a good week...quite the haul for a second-hand shop. That looks like the water bottle and carrier from the 1903 Bandolier equipment. It used to be a fairly common find here in Canada because it was also used with our 'Oliver' equipment prior to the first war. Uncommon...
