Wayne's character in The Searchers is a dark and angry man...really nothing endearing about the character at all. But it was a very compelling character. John Wayne's finest role.
I live on the flight path for Toronto's Island airport, so I hear a lot of light planes. That Spitfire, like the Harvards that flew over yesterday, make a distinctly different sound. Can't image what 50 of them will sound like!
Just had a Spitfire circling over my house for the past 5 minutes, waiting to make his appearance at the CNE airshow. Lookied like a Mk. IX but I could be wrong.
That's nothing, certainly, to the upcoming flight of almost 50 Spitfires and Hurricanes in England, but pretty exciting nonetheless!
Aside from High Noon, no one has mentioned the films that I'd consider the real classic westerns: Stagecoach (1939); The Searchers (1956); The Man who Shot Liberty Valance (1962); My Darling Clementine (1946); and the cavalry trilogy of Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and...
The UK, New Zealand and Australia declared war on Germany in 1939. Never ones to waste time, the German submarine, U-30, sank the British passenger liner S.S. Athenia off the coast of Ireland...the first ship sunk in the Battle of the Atlantic, on the first day of the war.

September 2, 1898: The Battle of Omdurman in the Sudan when, according to contemporary sources, "we crushed the power of the Khalifa". All crushing aside, I've had a long standing interest in this event, although I'll admit it's hardly 'golden era' material!
Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man. Whenever I tried reading this author's Maltese Falcon I found I couldn't get the Bogart film out of my head. As a result I never enjoyed the book. This one, however, is working out just fine...quite enjoyable.
I've always enjoyed Kelly's Heroes...and its music. That's probably because I view it as a comedy, not a 'war movie'. Anzio, on the other hand, was just a lousy movie. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has not aged well...you had to be there for that one. Like everyone else at the time, I...
After 143 days and over 5,000 km, Terry Fox had to end his Marathon of Hope near Thunder Bay, Ontario on this day in 1980. It was found that his cancer had returned and had moved to his lungs, making further running out of the question.
He was an inspiration to all Canadians and I had the good...
In this neck of the woods, Bell Canada only used equipment produced by Northern Electric, so other manufacturers phones are somewhat hard to find. I was really pleased to find this one at the Sunday Market yesterday.
It's a Stromberg Carlson model 1543 produced in May 1947. It needs some...
I watched Fear the Walking Dead as well. Although I like the premise of the show, I found it quite the slog. Like Worf, I'll give it a few episodes and see how it develops. I thoroughly enjoyed Better Call Saul, however, and look forward to the second season..."go land crabs'!
August 19th, 1942: the Dieppe Raid fiasco. Over 5000 Canadians, 1000 British and 50 US troops landed on the pebble beaches at Dieppe. A disastrous day for all involved...Infantry, RAF and RN.
