Well….one more.
This is Eddie Palmieri’s “Café” (a son montuno/cha cha) from 1964. It talks about the virtues of a strained, homemade cup of coffee. Barry Rodgers just kills it on the trombone.

One more just because the Comparsa rhythm is sick.

With the right partials it's amazing what you can achieve with two trombones.

Latin music reached the height of its popularity in this country during the 50’s. That’s when it really entered the public consciousness. The mambo (and later the cha, cha, cha) were a fad at the time. Unfortunately what was being listened to for the most part (as is usually the case), was...
I can't get enough of Georgie Fame lately.
Here he is on Willie Nelson's Funny How Time Slips Away.

Dance Mania by Tito Puente.
Last week the great conguero Francisco Aguabella passed away. I posted in the notable passings thread. I mistakenly wrote that Francisco played on the Tito Puente album “Dance Mania”. Though Francisco did play on many classic Puente records and wrote 2 of the tunes...
Francisco Aguabella has passed. I got a text Friday morning with the news. Francisco was possibly the greatest repository of Cuban drumming that ever lived.

Graciela cut this with Machito on the 1961 album “Machito At The Crescendo”. It’s incredible.

Victor Pantoja
A few weeks ago Victor Pantoja passed away. He succumbed finally to his third bout of cancer. Victor was a musician that “was there”. Here is a list of some of the people that he played with:
Harry James
Ella Fitzgerald
Dinah Washington
Sarah Vaughan
Sammy Davis
Nat King...
Three great voices from Ireland. They don't make them like this anymore.

I got to see Liam a few times as well as the last incarnation of the Clancy Brothers. They don't make them like that anymore.

Let me think about it. The thing about "Latin Boogaloo" is that it was very faddish. Many established Latin bands in the late 60’s did them because they were so popular. They were competing with young bands (many of which couldn’t play very well), for the younger audience.
Latin Boogaloo (or...
Speaking of kitschy themes redone, here is Bobby Valentin doing the Batman theme. I never really listen to this.

Ray Barretto also did a record called “Señor 007”. It’s all early James Bond music. As far as James Bond records go, it’s good. But Ray Barretto has made so many records that are absolute classics, that Señor 007 would be one of the last ones I’d buy (if you wanted to explore Ray Barretto)...

I've been a Jack Teagarden fan since I was 12. I love all of his work. Right before he passed he came out with an album that was elegant and beautiful, "Think Well of Me" (it was his second to last). "Don't Smoke in Bed" is a great representation of the album.

I don't go very long without putting in some John Barry music. What a romantic ba***rd. The Robin & Marion theme from the same movie almost turns me into a human (lol). I've remembered some really bad movies, just because the music was so romantic.
Eddie Palmieri throughout the years has had the sickest, most swinging bands on the planet. There is nobody that has ever swung harder, ever. Go see the man while you can. I’d go on and on, but talking about music is like dancing about art as someone once said. I’d recommend starting with these...
