Pam Murphy, Audie Murphy's widow

At first, no one knew who she was. Soon, though, word spread through the VA that the nice woman with the clipboard was Audie Murphy's widow.

It was like saying Patton had just walked in the front door. Men with tears in their eyes walked up to her and gave her a hug. "Thank you," they said, over and over.

The first couple of years, I think the hugs were more for Audie's memory as a war hero. The last 30 years, they were for Pam.

She hated the spotlight. One year I asked her to be the focus of a Veteran's Day column for all the work she had done. Pam just shook her head no.

"Honor them, not me," she said, pointing to a group of veterans down the hallway. "They're the ones who deserve it."

The vets disagreed. Mrs. Murphy deserved the accolades, they said.

Ernie Harwell

Ernie Harwell, the dean of baseball announcers, passed away today at the age of 92. He broadcast the Tigers' games for decades. His major league broadcasting career, however, started with the Dodgers in Brooklyn. He had the distinction of being the only sportscaster ever traded for a player. As I recall, the Dodgers sent a player to the old Atlanta Crackers (Atlanta's minor league team in the 40's) to get Ernie as their broadcaster.
He had one of those great mellow southern voices, like Mel Allen and Red Barber. A great gentleman and a great ambassador for the game of baseball.

I have many fond memories of Jocko's radio reports. His signature line "Gwyn Jocko Thomas, reporting from police head-quar-r-rters" is infamous in southern Ontario. The end of an era.

My favorite Lena Horne story is the famous incident where she turned her back on a group of white officers and German POWs who had been put in the front rows of the audience during a performance at a prisoner-of-war camp -- and walked up the aisle to sing directly to the black enlisted soldiers who'd been made to sit in the rear of the house. Show-biz talent aside, she was a woman of conviction and courage.

Francisco Aguabella has passed. I got a text Friday morning with the news. Francisco was possibly the greatest repository of Cuban drumming that ever lived.
