Luke Kelly “Days”. This was originally released only as a single. Then it made a now out of print compilation that accompanied a documentary on Luke. Amazing Ray Davies/Kings song made even better by the amazing Luke Kelly.

“Lock Up Your Daughters” by the Dubliners. This one was only released on a compilation called “A Drop Of The Dubliners”. It’s rare in that respect and the fact that it’s the only tune the Dubliners ever did where Luke Kelly and Ronnie Drew shared the verses. Awesome!

Can’t really get on board with Varsity Drag. Tito Puente did a version of it on probably his most famous record, 1958’s “Dance Mania” and I always thought that it was the weakest tune on there.

My favorite version of the song besides Dusty’s og version(s) is Willie Bobo’s. Willie was a master percussionist. He never made any bones about being a singer. It was just something that he enjoyed. I liken this to Herb Albert doing “This Guy’s In Love With You”. Don Sebesky did an amazing...
Wanting to walk the streets un-harassed aside, I changed my mind. You should wear your hat (if you like wearing it, and it sounds like you do), simply to be a social irritant. The average man on the street needs to get over his preconceived ideas and prejudices. It’s a good exercise in general.
This is really a personal question that only you can answer. I usually always have the attitude of “F” other people; I wear whatever I want. But I can also sympathize with the idea of wanting to remain anonymous or at least not wanting to be hassled. It’s a shame that you can’t just wear what...
My point is that the product is more important than the packaging. You're right though, my point of view doesn't really address the topic directly. However, if jazz is not relevant to the average person, then the jazz holes don’t stay open, more and more jazz musicians continue to starve, and...
If modern jazz music were vibrant, there would be a chance that it would gain popularity. Jazz has become an art form that is taught in school, and not on the street. It’s become irrelevant to the average person. I would like jazz to be a music that is appreciated by everyone.
There’s...
I play in a band with a guy named Victor Pantoja. Victor has been around. He started with Harry James in the 40’s, in an era when Harry would cancel a gig if Victor was not given the same housing accommodations as the rest of the band. Although Victor was New York Puerto Rican, for all intents &...
Manny Oquendo
As long as I'm at it..., Manny Oquendo died earlier this year. If I had to pick what my favorite band of of all time was, it would be hard, but I'd probably choose Manny Oquendo & Conjunto Libre. On top of that, Manny played on some of my other favorite records of all time with...
I was going through some old threads and came upon this. Cachao is every bit as important to the music world as someone like Charlie Parker. It's a shame that more people around here apparently don't know much about his music (judging from the lack of response to the thread) [huh]. Everyone...
Miles Perlich is a Los Angeles dj on the jazz station Kjazz. He hosts a show Saturday nights called “United Groove”. It also broadcasts online.

Miles probably has the hippest taste in music of anyone that I...
