My 50's Stetson had an oilskin. Probably why the sweat is rotted. The hat doesn't seem like it was worn very much at all though and the sweatband looked and felt pretty good until I put some conditioner on it. Then it instantly turned to crispy bacon. So clearly it was rotted but it hadn't had...
Thanks for the help everyone. I was hoping for tan/caramel color. Something close to 2" wide but it doesn't have to be exactly 2". Comfort is most important. I want to avoid the type of leather that wants to stick to the forehead. Those aren't fun and can be painful. I actually had one like that...
I have a nice 1950's Stetson that needs a new sweatband. I want to be sure that the flange by the stitching is done properly. I've seen so many poorly done sweats with stitching that isn't flanged out at all and it digs into the forehead. Probably about a third of production hats I've seen have...
Appaloosa was such a good movie. The end credits kick off with a fantastic but not well known Tom Petty song "Scare easy" by Tom's other band "Mudcrutch". I freakin' love Tom Petty so that was a total cherry on the cake!
Felt all year for me too but I can see where straw would be a comfy choice when it's warm but not too hot out. Felt might seem a little warm just because the rest of the body is fairly comfy. When it's hot and humid, sweat is going to be dripping down my face even without a hat so it really...
I like the looks of the "big country" open crown western. About 12 years ago I bought a pre-soiled hat from them. It cost $75. I wanted a hat that I didn't have to worry about getting dirty. I ended up sanding out all the stupid fake dirt and I wore the crap out of that thing. I was a teenager...
I think Akubra needs to use rabbit to keep the hat prices low enough to keep sales high. They were able to make a good sturdy, long lasting hat at a reasonable price. I'm worried that prices will continue to rise and quality will go down. Hope they can figure out how to keep doing what they were...
Over the years I've done the hand working wet and dry hats to soften them. I've noticed that this can cause fur fibers in the felt to break. The felt becomes loose and the structure of the felt fails. More prone to shrinking and taper. Has anyone had this happen with Akubras? I haven't yet and...
One of my friends always likes to try on my hats when she's over. She looked really good in my Snowy River. So much so that I've been looking for one in her size for her birthday. There's a youtube video of a young lady showing her collection. Might want to check that out to see what she had to...
Looks great Crazy Dave! These hats ARE boats! The vent holes in the crown even look like friggin portholes!
You're a guitar slinger, is this hat gonna see any stage time?
My avitar pic is me with my well loved '52 reissue tele and an old 10x Stetson. I forgot I even had an avitar pic, they...
I like how liners look but I always end up taking them out. Liners add extra weight and that alone can make a hat feel hotter to me. Once the liner is out I lightly pounce the inside crown to make it look and feel a little nicer.
I just got my Sombrero the other day. It really is a neat hat. I gave it a telescope crown, took out the swooping sides but left the cettle curl. I braided a leather band to replace the big piece of cow it came with. It seems like people shy away from the Sombrero because of its size and name...
I bet you'll get used to the wider brim.
MothPrey, the BOTP is no longer made. I thought it was pretty much the perfect hat and was looking forward to getting more. Nice tall open crown and a good wide brim with a slight pencil roll that could either be worked to form a good roll or just...
I didn't like mine due to the gross low and tapered crown. The crown is only going to taper more with age so why would you want to start with something already way too tapered? I don't understand why Akubra makes almost all of their hats that way these days.
How do you feel about the Campdraft?
Today I stopped in Frank Fritz( from American Pickers) antique shop in Savannah IL and I had to contain my drool. There was a man browsing the shop wearing the best looking fedora I've ever seen in person. It was a lighter mid brown 1940's style mid ribbon. The felt looked just amazing! Brim was...
I'm thinking of giving VS a shot. For the last few years I've been wearing mostly Akubra hats and have been happy with them but they've cut the models I like best and I wasn't able to "stock up". I like a larger brim. 3 1/2" raw edge is best for me and I wear a 7 1/2 so we're talking a fairly...
What would she do if you got her the same hat in her size for Christmas? That's what I'd do. Maybe some humor would help break the tension a little. Unless she has an actual phobia of hats... Then don't do that.
I'd want to know why she has a problem with the hat. If it's a control issue then...
And I thought my hot car method was extreme!! You don't mess around! I've considered using the oven on a hat that was way too big but it was summer and the car seemed a better choice. You could try a hat stretcher to bring the sweat band back a little. Maybe condition the leather first. Stretch...
The hat is discontinued now but it wasn't four months ago when I ordered it. I paid for the hat and recieved an order confirmation email. I then waited over four months and decided to ask about my order. Sam apologized and said that there was some mistake and he wasn't going to be able to...
