What is the name of this style

You might be able to get that style out of a Beaver custom. The key might be to specify an "untrimmed pencil curl"? Not sure, but this picture might represent that treatment: Better talk to them in person, before committing to a $260 hat! If their "custom" options don't make it, you...

    Vintage hat size question

I agree, go for your size - but don't spend too much, it's a crap shoot.

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

And that would make sense, in competition with others who have the same rigorous sense of the value of the item you're bidding on. What actually happens, too often in practice, is that the next highest bidder has a very flexible idea of its value, and when he sees that you've entered a higher...

What do you think of modern "Street/Punk" Fedoras?

I'll tell you who's likely to "graduate" to wearing a proper hat: man whose hair is no longer doing its job.

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Well ... suit yourself, but if you bid as much as you're willing to pay, then it logically shouldn't matter when you're outbid - seconds before the end, or days before. Someone else is willing to pay more than you are willing to pay. You can change your bid to even more, but you can't win that...

    Stetson Vita-felt

Does this sound to anyone else like the power of suggestion? Casein is not milk. It's used in paints, coated paper stock. I doubt an article made of casein is going to smell like milk, unless someone tells you it's made of milk. Does rayon smell like pine trees?

    Hat size? :)

55, 160, 7 1/2, near-sighted. You should see if you can find some other source for average hat size. I imagine some of the erudite members of this community would have some pointers. When you have enough results, take the average hat size reported here, compare that to what you would expect...

Nutria felt in the modern day

Don't miss out on the wild hogs all over the South. By some accounts quite the destructive menace, though that could be a myth for all I know. If you want to go get a hog, I think they're not as easy to find as the nutria (and you might want to bring a little more firepower), but there's a lot...

Depends on the nature of the stain? Maybe ufguy11 is reluctant to discuss the exact nature of his stain! Is there anything that naptha might make worse?

It's about time we define "fedora"

You see a flat top? Photo is a little fuzzy, could be. I thought center crease. The brim is unusually flat, with a very plain edge - like a western conversion. Many of the pictures leave the brim up all the way around, which makes it harder. To me, it can be a fedora with the brim up, but...

It's about time we define "fedora"

Millenia before we understood genetics in terms of genes and chromosomes, we understood heredity well enough to breed animals and plants. That's what makes the variation in trees different - it's constrained by the need to inherit characteristics. I can dream of, say, a date palm with leaves...

It's about time we define "fedora"

Of course - I was born in 1954. I suppose all you older guys kind of live in a different world? Grew up in sod houses on the prairie, stuff like that? About cowboy hats - really I believe we can find plenty of anecdotal evidence on this site and elsewhere that, in practice we might find all...

It's about time we define "fedora"

As tonyb pointed out earlier, a hat ain't a tree. You can do that kind of taxonomy on trees because there is variation in trees that naturally follows that kind of structure, inherited in their chromosomes. With hats, you might as well be looking at trees with one or more main branches broken...

It's about time we define "fedora"

They are certainly not fedoras. Be serious. Cf. "The Conversion Corral", which is about converting cowboy hats to what? Fedoras! Where, by the way, a quick scan of the first couple pages suggest that the post-conversion crease is usually a C crown. I'm guessing that is not particularly...

It's about time we define "fedora"

"Fedora (Alpine - Homburg - Cowboy)" you should say, if center crease is the defining characteristic.

Nutria felt in the modern day

They must know. The state has been paying bounties for years. Has anyone wondered what's going to happen, when it comes to light that you guys are wearing hats made out of bunny rabbits? I don't know, suppose it's possible that the hat industry is just laying low and doing nothing to...

Perhaps we could have two definitions - the pedantic definition, and the popular definition.

It's about time we define "fedora"

To me, that's why a homburg isn't a fedora, the curled brim. Maybe I haven't seen enough homburgs, or to put it another way maybe there's some cross-over territory where a homburg brim can be bound flat.
