Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I guess I can't blame the seller, the hat has "7 1/2" stamped in ink inside the sweatband, but ... can a hat really shrink from 7 1/2 to 6 7/8? Dobbs "Golden Coach" if that makes any difference.

It's about time we define "fedora"

I think you may not. Where this kind of usage makes sense elsewhere, like "Trombone Shaped Object", the referent is supposed to not actually be a trombone for functional reasons that we implicitly recognize as definitional: you have to be able to use a trombone to play trombone music, or it...

It's about time we define "fedora"

I like this care with semantics, but I have to admit I don't understand the details. Maybe too telegraphic for some of us morons. Did you really mean to say "(3) a member of the group objects"? Didn't get that one at all, wouldn't every object be a member of that group? ... example? If a...

It's about time we define "fedora"

That's for sure. Interesting analogy, though. Ever heard someone call any and all conifers "pine trees"? That happens enough to be somewhat common usage, but it's wrong anyway. A fir is not a pine, period. (And a Douglas fir is not a fir. Oh well.) But what's a "cedar"? From a strict...

What's the Right Hat for fishing?

Might also consider a "bump cap": . Light, good ventilation, keeps the sun off, and the fish hooks won't snag on it.

Nutria felt in the modern day

Similar situation in New Zealand, where the introduced "brush tailed possum" wreaks havoc on trees. The fur is apparently usable for fur garments, don't know how well it's suited to felting.

    vintage vs. new..

Anyone regularly buy used shoes or boots? Are they softer, and more comfortable? I would imagine so, but I bet they weren't when they were new! Conversely, a new shoe that's soft and comfy the first day, not likely to be as durable. Same could be true of hats, especially the parts that are...

It's about time we define "fedora"

I think the primary victim of the taper thing is the porkpie. I'm willing to let the porkpie go, since it does after all have its own identity, but honestly I think the distinction can be kind of blurred in practice - at first glance, for me, it's an "un-snapped" fedora brim, and from there the...

It's about time we define "fedora"

Did you miss the bit about Platonic Realism? How philosophical do you like it? It looks to me like there is no useful definition, that can also be defended on historical grounds. From a relatively casual acquaintance with the matter, pencil curls don't say "fedora" to me. If for no other...

It's about time we define "fedora"

If we never get the numbers, at least it's enough to demonstrate that 1) fedoras have historically been wool felt, not only fur felt, and that 2) the selection of vintage hats displayed on the Fedora Lounge site probably isn't statistically representative.

    Berets, Anyone?

It's a great idea, I suppose Ben Franklin would approve, but it's not what I see. That is no rooster - look at the tail. It might be one of more comical representations of an eagle, but I believe that's what they intended.

Deliberate "Too small size" ballcap fashion

If creative expression means wearing something absolutely unrelated to what anyone else wears, then I would expect it to turn up mostly among sociopaths and other abnormals. We're a social species.

    The Great Baron Hats Experiment

Seems like it could be misleading to compare a high end custom hat maker to a restaurant or an auto mechanic. Someone mashed my car up, and the body shop took a month or two longer than they predicted to graft on a new rear quarter panel, but the work was good, and the price was very...

"I could never pull off X"

Yeah. I was out Sunday amongst lots of people, and here's this guy with a hat. Well, he had a whole black suit and hat, very distinctive, anachronistic look that would have stood out even in a less casual scene. But I think I was as much a shock to him, as he was to me. Like ... it would be...

Deliberate "Too small size" ballcap fashion

Not that it's the same thing at all, but I have a 7 1/8 fedora that I like quite a bit. Sweatband etc. weren't salvageable, and the now plain felt crown sits a little high on my 7 1/2 LO head but fits OK. It isn't just a stingy brim, now it's a whole stingy hat!

Well, you should - it's the second-highest bidder who actually determines the price, so that's who gave it to you.

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180545929447 $52.51, for what looks to me like a slightly ragged dark grey Dobbs with a low crown, small brim, liner is gone ... I'm no expert, but would have guessed half the price at best. Even if it's someone dying to get on the Mad Men...

    Musicians?

Bagpipes are relatively loud, as you may be aware. I played a show once in sort of a concert band, where we were on the field at the same time as a large and very good pipe band (I believe Simon Fraser University.) Both bands played the same tune, we seated in rows farther apart than normal...

    Musicians?

trombone I see one for $45 in "Keizer" (not too familiar with the Salem area), on craigslist, but I'd go for the $225 Olds in "Jefferson." Even if it's the Ambassador student line, they're not so bad.
