That makes sense. I didn't notice anything strange about the muslin but now that I've made them up in gabardine there seems to be too much fabric in that area. Thanks for your opinion :)
Could it be that those Girl Zooters wear trousers with a more extreme loose fit because they are, after...
So do I! :D
There's nothing like getting that rush of empowerment from seeing old photographs like this one. This is where I found the pic but unfortunately there's not much information apart from "Above Girls Were Zoot Suiters As Well". Somebody ought to do some research on this.
I have a question ... I'm in the process of making a pair of 40's trousers (EvaDress 3322). I had a skilled seamstress grade the pattern and make a muslin after my measurements so the fit should be OK.
It seems that I have a bit of an MC Hammer pants thing going on, though. Should the...
All the pinking shears I've seen here have been quite expensive. I'm using a pair that belonged to my grandmother although they are really dull. I wonder where I can get them sharpened nowadays. Isn't Fiskars a Finnish brand, actually?
Great finds, Mary! ;)
The only one I can help you with is the nightgown. It's definitely 40s-early 50s (I'm not sure when they started using nylon instead of rayon and acetate?).
It looks like rayon but if it makes a very rustling and swishy sound when you move it's probably acetate. I just...
Aurora, thank you for posting your So-easy-patterns. They are exquisite! I love that "Two-Way Pyjamas".
Can we rename this thread Pattern Porn? I know they have a term called Yarn Porn on internet knitting communities, so I don't see why we can't have Pattern Porn lol
Josephine, I've heard that Wash&Go shampoo is excellent for stripping out henna. But it might be difficult to get out if your hair is really saturated with pigment. You could check the Henna for Hair forum, they will probably be glad to help.
Ooh, I feel so tempted to henna my hair now, after...
I'm 5'7". I don't feel evenly proportioned, though. If it wasn't for my freakishly long neck I would probably look shorter. I actually have to remember to wear a scarf because I easily get a sore throat due to my ostrich-like neck! :-D
Woohoo, I've got a pair of 40s heels in my size
Thanks a lot everybody! For some reason I had convinced myself that they were from the 70s.
I found them at this dodgy flea market in a deserted part of Amager. Apparently the flea market gods were with me that day. I also found a copy...
I'm still in awe over Mary's three pairs of shoes :)
I need your opinon on these platform heels - do you think they're from the 1940's or the 1970's?
As you can see, they have sandal toes rather than the tiny peeptoes of the 40's, but then again I have seen more open sandals from the...
Aurora, I have one of those So-Easy patterns too. It looks like this:
For some reason these don't seem easy to come by. The illustrations are the best, I'd love to see your entire collection. :)
Not stupid at all! I wear cardigans a lot, too, so I've invested in a load of short sleeved cotton tricot camisoles like this one. Sooo comfortable and easy to wash :)
...erm, unless you want to wear the cardigan unbuttoned. In that case I would wear a blouse or a neutral matching t-shirt.
It says to apply a mask once a week if you're over 25. I have no idea what the point of those bandages is, though ... it just looks really really strange.
Cleansing cream instructions from an early 50's beauty book
Okay, so the text is in Danish but I thought I'd post it anyway as at least a handful of you will be able to read it.
Basically it says that a good cleansing cream is made of mineral oil and paraffin and that you should always...
Okay, after a short googling frenzy I found two Scandinavian suppliers of witch hazel, this one and this one.
I'll definitely order from one of these. I usually use Mellisa skin tonic which contains witch hazel but I'd prefer the more concentrated kind.
By the way, I have a vintage beauty...
Other organic brands that do bright reds are Annemarie Borlind and Jane Iredale. You could always do a patch test before you buy to see if your skin tolerates it.
If everything else fails you could follow the suggestion in an episode of Foyle's War and use beetroot juice to stain your lips! :p
