Need a summer hat recommendation
I have tried straw hats of many different price levels and types. If there is one constant that has emerged, it's that cheap milan straws (fake or otherwise) are the most practical summer hats. They aren't as flimsy as cheap panamas, it takes longer for the sweat to stain through the straw...- Not-Bogart13

casual place for hats
To my mind, eating with a hat on is reserved for bbq's and picnics. It just seems rude to me otherwise. [huh] Granted, it's hard to find a place to put a hat when eating in a fast food place. A stingy is a hat with a very narrow brim, usually 2 1/4" or less. When you say Whippet, do you mean the Whippet of the 40's or something newer? Because the Whippet has changed several times. I like Hats Plus. I've gotten numerous hats from them. They happen to carry the sort of summer stuff I like, and their service is great. Very friendly on the phone and by e-mail. Specs; 2 5/8" brim with 7/8" binding. 5 1/2" open crown, 1 1/2" ribbon. Right now, that's his widest binding, and the only wider ribbon he has is 2"... a bit much for just a 5 1/2" crown, I thought. Welcome to the madness, Shark. I think your instincts for hat type are good; Something with a brim that's narrower than 2 1/2 inches, fairly low crown.
