I took the dogs for a pre-dawn walk this morning and wore my ELC Irvin. Yes, the Irvin. It's now MAY ! We have 1 daffodil in the front yard so far. ONE ! No buds on the trees yet. At this rate I'm thinking it'll warm up around August ....
Oh Lordy! I see the problem ...
Okay, so if painting over the offending design/s isn't an option, I'd suggest working it off with acetone.
As said previously, acetone is pretty potent stuff and should be used in a well ventilated area. As also said, it will strip the oils from your skin - but...
I take your point ...
This is the front of my C3 - the squadron insignia I painted to the front right panel:
Sure, this gets worn under my ELC RW B-3, so nobody sees it ... but I don't have a problem with it as I feel that by wearing it, I'm serving to remember the USAAF 305th BS, 364th BG -...
To each their own, Baron. One man's meat is another man's poison, t'is true ...
PS. And it's just as well I'm not making my point further by posting the next project I drew up for Lucky Dog, then ....! Methinks you wouldn't like that one either... ;-)
I suppose it's a similar technique to splinter camouflage - nothing in nature is straight and a strategically placed straight line draws the eye away from what you'd prefer to hide. That's the theory anyway.
Curves work the same way, it seems ...! :)
And of course, thinking about this further, you could do what I mentioned above - and then paint on a better nose/jacket art design of your choice to replace the old one - and that would further detract from any slight imperfections that may be a leftover tell-tale sign that there there was a...
Some years ago, I bought a B-6 from ELC in their dark bitter chocolate colour - and I opted for the AAF decal on the left sleeve - which, when it showed up, I wasn't a fan of and I began to wish I'd left it off - so it left me with this same dilemma.
So rather than use some acetone (which is...
Hmmm. Purely in the spirit of being constructive and honest, I have to say that, to my eye, I think there's a bit too much going on - the name tag is very USN, the other patches are US Army and the jacket is USAAF ... and to add to that, I think the sleeve patches are too bright - meaning...
In answer to the original question posed, IMHO, I think cloth patches are fine - as long as they're limited to standard AF and squadron patches - rank of any kind would be a no-no of course, unless, as you're doing for your father, it's a tribute jacket - or one desires a copy of an original...
Great jacket, BN ! It's a winner - and I love the bakelite lucky dice zip puller too! A nice personal touch ...
Oh, you won't be sending that back and asking for a refund ...! The D-1/B-6 jackets offer the perfect amount of warmth for a temperate climate like Britain's, IMO. As you say, it'll be...
Just googled the place - looks like a great place to sup hearty .... and they have a page on the Memphis Belle of course.

I'll second that to photos of the pub if you have them - a great find ! And photos of the D-1 please when you get it - with the furry dice zip puller ! ;-)
And what took 18 months to get this far ? Saving the money, you mean? The Saab repair got in the way, I recall you saying a while ago ...
For 18 years I ran around in an Irvin and A2 by Aviation Leathercraft - and was content, ignorance being bliss and all that. Between them, I felt I had all I needed ...
Then, around 1995, when they were getting too tight on the chest and I needed something bigger, I decided to upgrade them and...
