Yeah, I don't really buy hats too much anymore. I have way too many. I'm liquidating about 12 more this month. Maybe then I'll be able to buy a few more. I know I'll be buying one or two of Fedora's custom hats - his block is a superb stovepipe 30s crown (I have one of his blocks in my...
I'm sure Root will explain...
...but I think that's a NOS 30s Dobbs with a super-rare plain edge. There are some photos kicking around of it somewhere, I think.
Women have a way of doing just that.
Our wedding, in 2001, was also old-school. I don't have any of those photos scanned, though. I'll have to do that.
Let me start by saying...stay away from that one I'm bidding on...!
OK, back to the program.
The felt is, for lack of a better-fitting word, buttery. And I don't think there is a better-fitting word. It's very light, very soft, and it's insanely pliable. They have what may be my...
ah...I must have misunderstood. I feel like a dope. You probably mentioned that it was made up in a mall already.
they have a whole bunch of Time 'century recaps' based on each decade at a few bookstores here, and they have titles like that. I've only seen The Fifties and The Sixties...
Ren, I kind of agree with Root's assertions about repros. The additional thing is, I like the patina that goes with old clothes. when I go to thrift stores. The materials they used to use just have a certain look about them.
DaVinci, a company which made casual shirts back in the day, is...
Thanks, Ren!
My wife is about half as insane as I am for the Golden Age-retro thing. She almost always does her hair in a 40s/50s style, though, and she's always worn the glasses and had that kind of makeup. She's the one who actually got me into vintage clothes and all the rest, about five...
Here is a photo from a wedding my wife and I were at in Palm Springs a few weeks ago. You can't see much of it, but I am wearing the early 30s black suit I bought from Art (and sadly, a modern tie which matched the groom's, but what can you do?).
The wedding was at a tiny old resort where...
Root,
I'm sure you know this already, but I thought I'd add that another reason men's vintage clothes are very difficult to find is that men don't take care of their clothes the way women do. Women will buy a new dress for a special occasion, wear it once or twice, then never wear it again...
Great photos! I'm going to try to find that issue of Time on eBay. Looks like I would enjoy it.
That Borsalino is the bee's knees. Borsalinos are my favorite hats, and that one is a real beauty. Congratulations!
Paddy,
It looks great on you! I'm so glad it went to a good home. And it really does resemble that trainer's hat from Seabiscuit, in color, if nothing else (I think this hat loos a little classier than that one).
Anyway, glad you're enjoying the hat. It looks fantastic on you. And I...
You definitely need an old phone. I'm hoping to get a candlestick-style for xmas, so I can hang my hat on it like Marlowe.
My desk looks like FDR's.
OK, it looks worse than that.
Renor27, you might want to grab yourself an old Montgomery Ward catalog on eBay from the era you're going...
You can go to hardware stores, too, and get the foam for weatherstripping (I think that's what it's called) doors and windows. They all have all different widths and thicknesses. Sort of like what Akubra ships their hats with, but with some sizing options. I use a pretty thick but narrow type...
yep, you've got some nice ones there!
Can't wait to hear a little more about them.
I too have the fever...I'm down to about forty, now.
That's still a ridiculous number, if you ask me.
