You are on the right track, sir. And welcome to the madness!
You have a fairly round face and broad shoulders, so the safe bet is to keep your hat brims over 2 1/2 inches wide (that's measured from the edge to the bottom of the dome, or "crown"). The style in the last photo should work for...
Blackthorne, I'm afraid I'm going to be keeping this one. It's a sweet lid. If another one rolls along, I recommend not hesitating. ;)
Thank You, Bill!!!! :)
I had a similar experience to Guttersnipe, which was compounded by the fact that I have unusual proportions. That made it difficult for Magnoli to figure out why things went wrong with my 3-pc. suit. It wasn't his fault. So, be sure you trust the measurements you provide.
As for the things...
Never heard of Churchill, so I'm not sure how they compare. But Biltmores are good starter hats. I had several in my early fedora-wearing days. However, Biltmore has various finishes (how they feel to the hand), and I don't know which the Stewart would be. I personally liked the "Baldwin" as...
OH! Some other advice I was given on this very forum about this sort of thing; As long as you coordinate with either the coat or the suit/ jacket, you can't go wrong. Thus, if you must have only one hat for colder weather, coordinate with the coat, because the hat is generally removed with...
The seller is trying to be honest, even if he is not well informed. Since Beaver Brand makes many different blends, it's hard to say what he really has.
100% Beaver is expensive, and you can get it from the better custom hatters. Beaver Brand might even carry one, though I don't recall. In...
Carbon grey has a bit of a blue tone to it, in addition to being dark. It won't work with the trench.
If your willing to expand on color choices, why not black. It goes with everything. Or, if you know your way around replacing a ribbon, go for a brown hat with a black ribbon.
You best...
WolfeMan, the military caps have been popping up on ebay quite a bit these days. Obviously, the smaller your size better luck you'll have. The olive greenish wool versions are more common than the tan ones, so that might be a real option for you. For more information on them, as well as...
Fedora was a no-brainer for me. While I love homburgs, I have trouble making them work - very few look good on me. That, and I own over a dozen fedoras, but only two homburgs! lol
Being as far away as I am, my advice my be somewhat self-serving. I'd love a shot at the 7 1/2's! But here it is, anyway;
There are stores out there (and in LA, there should be a good number) that can take photos, pack & ship, and even run ebay listings if you wanted to go that route. Yes...
I would say, steam it when you're about to sit down and watch some TV. That way, you can just hold it how you want it for a while. That's generally when I reshape hats, because I don't need my hands to watch tv. ;)
Sorry Blackthorn. I've been on the prowl for a a deal on one of this style for weeks.
If I don't like it when I see it in person, I'll offer it to you first.
I don't now what a rain resistant straw would look like, and I'm just reading here for the first time that some of Dobbs milans might be ok in the rain. I have never seen any official description to suggest that for any Dobbs.
That said, the Spirit does not have the shine that my others do...
Well the Spirit I mentioned earlier is styled similarly, but is a might more breathable than Dobbs' usual milans. I actually felt the wind through it the other day. It has a fabric sweat, and I don't know if it's water resistant. But it's nice.
