I've never been convinced that it's the Lock & Co. I don't doubt that Downey bought one - he's a hat guy. And at least one Lock hat has shown up in a film of his, as well as in public.
I have to agree with Bruce. The Peter Brothers seem a bit casual. Great field hat, though. If you prefer milan over panama, try for something stiffer. Most off-the-rack milans hold their shape stubbornly and are so heavily treated that the coarseness is covered up.
a-Yup! :)
Of course, the same can be said of the hat, outside hat-aware communities like this one. In fact, there was a recent post on COW about a guy who was wearing an AB Indy 4 hat in a store and an self-professed Indy fan complimented his hat. However, that fan noted politley, with...
Felt is an organic product, and felt hats all "behave" in unique ways. So, pretend that sucker is alive, and train it.
Basically, what you want to do is boil some clean water. Then, hold the hat about 6 to 8 inches from the surface, letting the steam roll over the top of the hat for about...
I've been seeing this "style" being pushed for a couple of years now. I don't think it's catching on, and I understand why. People don't like buying things with an identity crisis, I find.
I would agree that the hat played a part in it. Raiders had the benefit of being a great movie, so I don't doubt it's success without the hat. But the iconic status of any movie character relies heavily on distinctive visual characteristics. So it was with Indy and his hat, and thus the movie...
The Stetson and Dobbs milans (which I favor) don't tend to shrink easily, but be careful about getting something too tight. These hats don't have a lot of give. I have the same size issue, but I have come to like the looser feel on a hot day. [huh]
Now, if you end up looking at something...
Not to become a self-appointed moderator, but... this thread is not about who thinks who is insignificant (although the infinite ironies of all that entails might be fun to discuss). Could we all just let the irrelevant talk stop. This is one of the first threads on this topic to remain civil...
Well, I sold a St. Regis for over $100, and I've seen vintage Stetson fedoras crawl to $200 or so, depending on model and size. There is a reason I don't own a vintage Whippet - in my size they can go for quite a high price!
Well, some would agree in regards to modern Dobs lids, too. But they have to go hand in hand, because Steve Harvey hats are just variations on existing Dobbs hats. Most of them look a fright, but quality is equal to any other Dobbs.
I only own a couple of straw Steve Harveys... surprisingly...
Well, Tone, you're experience wearing Christy's trumps my "first impressions" any day. Maybe it wears cooler than it feels. I'll find out soon enough. lol
As for the same-felt thing, it's the word that's going around. Now that I have held both in my hands... My guess is that an...
The Adventurer is basically a Temple of Doom hat that comes open crowned with a 3" x 2.5" raw brim. And really terrible bow tacking. :( All I wanted was the block shape, because it had the least taper of their fedoras. I then ordered a bow change, binding, and different brim width. They...
For those who might want to know, I recently decided to try a Christy's to fill the role. I was going to go custom, but I'm not sure if I'll wear an all black hat that much. So, I decided to go for something less expensive. If it gets enough use, I'll upgrade to a custom, but for now, this...
Well, once you have the hats in hand, you'll know how nice they are. But if that Homburg is as nice and minty as it looks, you didn't over-pay. You paid within the normal range for a hat like that, from what I've seen. A fedora style in that shape would probably fetch a higher price...
