Here's a random selection of meaty places, depending on what type you like:
New York Steam Packet Co - central, good steaks and burgers, cheap, BYOB
Indaba - quite central, South African, not expensive
Hanam's - Middle Eastern, near castle, good cheap kebabs, BYOB
Wildfire - central, good steaks...
Edinburgh has no shortage of good food and bars, so if you say what type of things you're interested in, I could hopefully steer you in the right direction.
Looks good, not too tight. Where does the hem sit in relation to your belt when you stand straight?
What size is it compared to your other Aero's? I got the impression you'd need to size up one of two.
As for pockets, maybe think about downsizing to a cardholder for cards and notes. I've used one for at least 10 years now and would never go bulky again.
A cardholder wallet would easily fit into that chest pocket, and shirt pockets too, without any bulge.
Having said all that, depending on...
Yeah, @tropicalbob, every time I walk past Walker Slater I see really nice 3-piece tweed suits I'd like to buy, even though I'm not a suit guy. And that's just off the rack, not even their custom ones.
@willyto, depends what you want to do in Edinburgh and if you're coming by car or public transport, but I would suggest a minimum of 2 days/3nights there including the pilgrimage. By train or bus you'd need say 90 mins door-door from Edinburgh to the factory plus however long you think you need...
I wouldn't worry too much about the stiffness of FQHH. My Stockmans are considerably softer than my shorter jackets.
Apart from them being worn more often, I think it's maybe because there are less seams per square yard or whatever, maybe making it more pliable. And they're not half belts...
I agree with most others. That's definitely not too short in the front, or back. That's just the style.
I wear an Aero Wool HB that's shorter in the front than that, but as long as the belt's covered it's fine.
I agree about the longer jackets being the most useful single buy. If I was only allowed one jacket, I'd choose my Stockman simply because I wear it more often and in more varied situations than any other jacket.
Shorter ones look better, but for me have more limited use.
@Otter, yeah, the Paramo gilet was a major leap forward in warming up in the mountains. No more taking your jacket off in a howling gale to add a fleece. So simple it's amazing no one thought of it before.
We wear ours much more than the full jacket version as it's so much more flexible.
I've never had an issue with weight, but I get 38/40. At the time of storse, I weighed all my FQHH jackets and they ranged from about 2kg for a short HB to only 2.7kg or so for both Stockmans.
I gather steer is heavier, but how Plumbline ended up with an 8kg VDR is beyond me. That should've...
Yeah, never buy anything "Scottish" from these shops. I'd always go for something you're certain's been made in-country, even though it will be a lot more expensive.
I just find the longer jackets more practical. I get more use out of my Stockmans than the shorter ones simply because they're better for bad weather and I can get away with them at work.
@Dav, I can't see the upper pockets on that. Do you have them? If not, isn't it more of a Stockman...
Agreed, @Fanch. I doubt if anyone would go out of their way to visit Galashiels, whereas it's absolutely 100% worth going out of your way to visit Aero. And it being only 1 hour from Edinburgh means that it's easy to combine that with a visit to the city. Win-win.
I drove through Galashiels twice today and I'm sorry to say it always reminds me of something out of the eastern bloc due to the spread of identical cube-like houses on the outskirts. And the massive Asda and Tesco stores don't help either.
I much prefer nearby Melrose, but as it's my...
