Navy WEP Jacket: Your Thoughts & Experiences

Photo from SG-1, which I suppose played a part in keeping WEP jackets popular, although they used replicas in the show obviously.

    Import Duties....... What the Hell?

You don't want to hear this, but you should have been paying duties all along. I suggest exploring your country's customs service website and digging around for the duty schedules which will list the % for each types of goods. You can use this to calculate your exposure, depending on what...

    Restored 1972 WEP Jacket

I imagine those weirdly shaped cuff knits would be tricky to repair or replace!

    Famous People in Flight Jackets

That's great to hear and thanks for sharing. I definitely have more respect for Shia now. I have a friend who is a young, non-famous actor and he says most "stars" ignore the crew and in fact are often quite rude to them (except to the director and producer, whom they fawn over).

    Restored 1972 WEP Jacket

Short indeed, that one would barely reach my belly button, never mind my belt. Anyways, the restoration and cleaning appears to have been a definite success and your jacket looks excellent... are the knits new? I've only ever seen chewed-up knits on oldie jackets.

You are correct. I thought the jacket interesting since it's probably a new Alpha, but it's been heavily used and the fur on the hood is getting pretty sparse.

Trench Coat - the 'Ultimate' Thread!

^ You're exactly right, the length is appropriate for the times, as is the overall fit. In the late 80s or early 90s a floor-sweeping length and oversized shoulders would be appropriate. Context, historical and social, is something internet denizens -- most of whom seem to have literally been...

To throat latch, or not to throat latch?

I agree they can be extremely useful, but unfortunately many are poorly shaped or placed. I think with leather jackets one has to be careful that the latch isn't too thick when stowed or it won't allow the collar to rest properly.

What hat are you waiting for today?

I have no idea if there's a general photo thread, so I'll post these photos here: That's not me, obviously!

    Stay or Go?

Although I like the idea of authenticity, I don't like the idea of giving up pockets to maintain authenticity!

New G-1 Winter / Fall Project

And let's not forget the two elastic bands inside the back to keep the bi-swing back vents together when at rest!

New G-1 Winter / Fall Project

This should be very interesting -- I'm really looking forward to photos, etc. Having heard about your shoulder issue several times in the past, I think it's fair to say we're all wishing success for this project!

    Repairing greatcoat buttons and buttonholes

Old military coats often had a bit of string or cord that was laid around the circumference of the buttonhole then sewn down via the stitching which Steve shows above. He's right, it's tedious but not terribly difficult. Maybe you have a grandmother or aunt or someone who does sewing?

    RIP VLJ??

I agree with you. Member retirement and turnover are issues for any forum so a closed from door means a declining membership over time.

    Did she look like this?

So I was chatting with some girl online...

MA-1 jackets were bomber jackets in the sense that plenty of USAF aircrews wore them while flying bombers.
