Full marks for supporting small business!
The jackets fit and look great. Nice to see Alpha is putting a leather pull on their zips, which for a long time they didn't have. I've really started to like navy blue for flight jackets, but all of mine are green, ha ha
British winters are nicer than Canadian winters, although you're quite right to note that dampness can be bad. For what it's worth, I have it on good authority that Moscow winters are nicer than Toronto winters, since Moscow is a dry cold, whereas Toronto is not.
Are you the sort of person who...
Forget retail, get an old military coat. A quick glance of the UK e-Bay site brings up dozens and dozens of British greatcoats of all types. Or check out some military surplus stores online. Lots to choose from.
Suggestion: maybe look for a UK Foot Guards greatcoat. They're readily available and in a hundred different sizes (chest and length). Condition varies but they can usually be had in quite good condition for reasonable prices - just avoid one which was slashed by the DND before disposal since...
I suspect the original film coat might have been a women's coat, modified for the film, or maybe an imagining of a Georgian or early Victorian era male coat of some kind. It does not look masculine at all. I like the website version better, which for what it's worth, resembles strongly the coats...
I agree with this post based on my experience. I tend to think of wool as like leather, except with a colder temperature range. As you said in your previous post, when the cold gets serious then you have to turn to insulated coats. When it's -20C I don't care what I look like as long as I'm warm!
Now that I think back a friend of mine's roommate had a black Soviet cadet bandsman's greatcoat which was extremely heavy and thick - that was well made. But that would have been from an academy or something and not quite rank-and-file. As for quality, I suggest reading about the Soviet...
Don't bother with ex-Soviet or Russian stuff, it was never good quality and the Soviet regime didn't really care about its soldiers. Others here are right, make sure you're tall and thin and keep in mind ex-military stuff like this is best for casual weekend wear. There's lots of western...
Blue Angels (click for large images). Can anyone suggest the likely brand of these jackets? They've got side entry pockets. I bet they're not regular issue.
Blue Angels out on the town, two of whom I'd be happy to meet in a bar. I'm sure they never pay for drinks!
I have no horse in this race since I can't possibly afford current asking prices for shearling flight jackets, but I can't get over the appearance of that crinkly surface. I know it's historically accurate, but... wow.
^ I guess you're right, but I had never seen an A2 or anything like it until I became interested in flight jackets about 15 years ago, more or less starting with an Eastman catalog. Around here it was always furry collared bomber jackets, for some reason, so I guess that's why I had a weird...
