What was it Curtis LeMay had - Bell's Palsy? I think that was from excessive altitude in an unpressurized cabin. I don't know that it would be sufficient to send you home, though.

I actually meant the fellow with the pipe. Based on what I've read on the website the bearded, pipe-smoking, jodhpurs-wearing, houseboy-having type is exactly the sort of fellow they're parodying/paying tribute.
"Moses" probably does have the right idea, but Lattimore certainly looks the...
Waterman Phileas, fine nib, typically filled with Private Reserve Lake Placid Blue, and
Sheaffer Prelude (just found out the model name), medium nib, typically filled with Sheaffer Blue-Black.
Right now both are filled with blue-black, but I find the Lake Placid Blue writes better...
This thread has me intrigued - right now I'm writing exclusively with Private Reserve Lake Placid Blue (which I like a lot) and Sheaffer Blue-Black (which I like sometimes and sometimes I detest). I may have to try out some brown ink, however, I've always liked it on old documents but had also...
I swear we have nearly the same desk. I had always thought mine was oak, however. Mine also lacks the medallions on the front, but my drawer pulls match your medallions. Do you know anything else about these desks? Information is hard to come by, even though I live only about 40 minutes from...
I don't know art, but I know what I like, and Andrew Wyeth is the only one in this group I care for.
But I'm an uncultured swine, I love the aforementioned period advertising art, though I cringe when I think of the old magazines being butchered for it.
Edit: I also like the commercially...
One day, that auction will be gone, and somebody will do a Google search and find this post, and get frustrated because there aren't any pictures. Future person, this pic's for you:
A very handsome hat.

I didn't find the Helios website to be terribly helpful myself. I just checked out my watch and the back just says "Stainless Steel" (in English). I suspect this is probably a post-war watch, 1950s maybe. The pins are solid, a feature I'd never noticed until I was asked.

Gosh those Schipperfabrick 9 footers and a pair of their feldgrau breeches would work great with my green-plaid pea coat. Of course, suddenly I feel like I'm lacking in the boots department!
-Dave
Lots of good info, thanks to all. I do have to comment on this - perhaps I just don't know how to wrap them, but how do puttees keep stuff from your boots? And where do you get them?
-Dave
Back when I was in high school, all the military surplus catalogs were filled with 1950s Swiss Army Surplus - personally I had an overcoat, a rucksack, a couple bread bags, and a pair of winter gaiters.
It was great stuff, hard wearing and felt like it would last forever. My brother had a...
Update Re: S10 Blazer and Ford Escort
Since I originally posted to this thread my Dobbs melted into unwearability and has been replaced with a Stetson Candidate and an Akubra Fed IV. Both have a taller crown than the Dobbs, and the Fed IV has a broader brim - no clearance problems on either...
Of course that's what I meant. It would look pretty silly to try and have the sleeves tailored off a jacket and wear it as a vest. I just wanted some assurance that there was enough fabric to harvest.

Doesn't it, though? The only difference is that it's about ten pounds too light. When I removed it from the packaging I nearly threw it over my shoulder because I was expecting it to be heavier.
Sorry, different discussion. We were discussing eBay sniping above.

I've got several old sportcoats and blazers that no longer fit me. They're not vintage, but they're pretty decent material. Would it be plausible to have a local tailor alter them into vests, or isn't there enough material?

Wow, kinda cool. My dad can tie dye, I should find some rayon and get him to tie die it for me. Then persuade my wife to make it into a necktie.
Or... do you suppose a tie-dye bowtie would look good?
-Dave
Still, I kinda like "swooping", it's less violent.
To keep it on topic, did I show you folks my new phone accessory?
ThinkGeek's Retro Handset for Bluetooth-enabled cellphones. It's great, though too light.
I still want to make a plug-in handset from an old General Electric 500...
