    F.B.I. fedora circa 1938

Somebody needs to send this picture to the "Zootshooting" folks! -Dave

What is your favorite aircraft of all time?

I hate to nitpick, but that's an F7F, this is an F3F: Very Golden Era, like an F4F Wildcat, but a biplane. -Dave

Hmm, I usually hear that practice called "sniping." -Dave

favorite cars of the golden era

RE: Auto styling Car guys all claim to hate enviornmental controls, swearing that's what ruined cars, but I beg to differ. It's the Naderist safety movement that decreed that we should be able to drive like total idiots and survive that killed styling. Maybe if there were more chrome bumpers...

    Showcase of Non-Indy Federations

I've always avoided black fedoras because I fear looking like Jack Abramoff, but I have softened toward them recently, and wouldn't mind owning one with about a 2-inch brim. As for a ribbon swap, I still find a contrasting ribbon on a black hat a bit too "gangster" for my taste. -Dave

    Hat for a Job Interview?

I disagree. Dressing nicely shows respect for the interviewer. Maybe a suit is too far, but I don't care if you're interviewing to dig septic systems, you wear a collared shirt, slacks, and dress shoes, and preferably a necktie. As for hats, bow ties, and other personal style choices, I...

    Vintage Phones

A tip: try Craigslist first, or at least limit your eBay searches to your locale, because old phones are heavy (that's why they've lasted) and they cost a fortune to ship. If I recall correctly, my AE80 was something like $4.99 (nobody bid against me) but was going to be $15.00 to ship across...

The Elephant in the Room - Man Purse

http://www.customhide.com/custom_1945_US_Army_briefcase.html $299.00 US. Be forewarned, however, they take a while to get there. Still, it was worth the wait in my opinion. -Dave

    Mama, I Can't Breathe!

So Vicks VapoRub can hurt you if you don't use it right? Gosh, next you'll tell me I shouldn't be using my belt sander to trim my toenails! :rage: Vicks works well for its intended purpose, and it makes me mad to see a headline that appears to give it a bad rap for what the parents did to...

The Elephant in the Room - Man Purse

It actually came with a shoulder strap and D-rings on the sides to clip it to, but I don't wear it. I've been wearing over-the-shoulder messenger bags for so long now, I'm ready to stop feeling like a school boy (I graduate law school on Saturday). Besides, the shoulder strap ruins the lines...

    Rum and Coke Question

Cuba Libre! The only way to drink Rum & Coke in my opinion. Also, I prefer a white rum to a spiced, but that comes from over indulging on the spiced once too often in college, particularly in combination with Vanilla Coke. That was a nice combination while it lasted. Today I hardly drink...

favorite cars of the golden era

1940 Chevrolet in Color! You folks might appreciate this post on the Jalopy Journal. It's an original 1940 color promotional film for the new Chevrolet. Kind of a neat look at an idealized version of middle America just before WWII. -Dave

German U-boat crewmen buried in Indonesia

I didn't fully understand the article (was it translated into English?), but it seems to suggest that these men were veterans of German operations in the Pacific who found themselves stranded far from home after the Axis surrender and were forced to hike inland looking for Quinine supplies and...

The Elephant in the Room - Man Purse

I don't know about "interesting" per se, but this was my Christmas gift from my father in law. It's probably the most respected bag on the Lounge - the Custom Hide US Army 1945-model brief case. It's the nicest briefcase I've ever seen. It's 100% leather, good thick stuff like you'd hang...

    Zootshooting

I could be wrong, but hasn't the popularity of Cowboy Action Shooting actually increased the supply of good reproduction Victorian-era clothing? Perhaps if "Zootshooting" (what a name, I preferred G-man Action Shooting) catches on it will mean a similar increase in good reproduction Golden...

MG42 German Machine Gun in Afghanistan

The M60 is like a hybrid of the MG42 and the FG42. I don't think it's quite so bad as it gets made out to be, but it wasn't the resounding success the '42 was. Still, I'd probably rather deal with an M60 than a BAR or an M1919A6. -Dave

    Showcase of Non-Indy Federations

Wow, Paladin, your Fed has a lot more taper than mine. I wonder if that's from your having steamed it. Still, it looks good, it reminds me a lot of my old Dobbs. -Dave

MG42 German Machine Gun in Afghanistan

Perhaps I should have watched the video first. That's not an MG42, it is in fact the aforementioned MG3. Same design, but with a heavier bolt, chambered for the 7.62 NATO round, and a few other tweaks. I usually don't watch YouTube videos, and if I had, I would have noticed that this isn't a...

MG42 German Machine Gun in Afghanistan

I can think of a few explanations as to how this piece might have gotten there, some more plausible than others. The Soviets had a reputation for never throwing anything away, and certainly captured a lot of German equipment in WWII, so it's possible that when the Soviet Afghan government was...

    Show us your Guns!

M1911s Couple M1911 questions for you fellows: 1) Is anybody making a reproduction M1911 (with the straight back, non -A1)? 2) Is there a "generic" GI-style M1911A1 on the market? All the ones I see look good at a distance but when you get up close say something like "ACCUR8 45 BLAST-O...
