Sportcoats into waistcoats?

I've got several old sportcoats and blazers that no longer fit me. They're not vintage, but they're pretty decent material. Would it be plausible to have a local tailor alter them into vests, or isn't there enough material?

A tailor could probably harvest the material from a jacket to make up a vest but I doubt he could alter a jacket into a vest. In the end you'd just be saving the cost of the material.

Of course that's what I meant. It would look pretty silly to try and have the sleeves tailored off a jacket and wear it as a vest. I just wanted some assurance that there was enough fabric to harvest.
