Will a 1000 still be a 1000, or will it be an 1100 now? If it's not going to change, it would seem crazy to throw $650 at a hat and not go the extra $350 to get the very best.
Your method should work fine without any need for stiffener.
It's a low quality hat (if you want something good, you don't want wool), and I agree that it doesn't look very much like a 30s or 40s hat.
Great photos. I love the architectural details of the Gallery and your wife's "really? more photos for your internet hat friends?" look. I've seen that look from my wife many times.
I was under the impression that Churchill made the hat while Vicuna (the proper name of a person) was in the room. It could say made with Steve, but that's less desirable.
