    My new place

I have that same blender hanging around someplace! I took the motor out (carefully, it could still be reinstalled) and used it as a bowl for my beta in college. Sadly, Milkshake died and I haven’t had a fish since. Your place looks great. -Dave

Singing the Praises of the Esterbrook Fountain Pen

I am determined to end up with a J eventually, and I found the nib chart very interesting. I just bid on a J with a 2556 nib, which looks like it’s for “fine writing”. It looks like the 2968 or 9968 is what I’ll want to acquire next. I have a fairly broad nib in my Sheaffer Prelude, and...

"Ask the Man Who Owns One"

Offhand, I'd say it's just been chopped and had some chrome removed. I rather like it as it sits, but imagine it with the chrome reinstalled, factory paint, and stock wheelcovers. I think it would have something of the air of a prewar Custom. -Dave

This car is local to me, but I've yet to see it in person. -Dave

    Watch the Fords go by!

Hang around long enough and we may have you into a real oldie yet. The '38 and '39 Fordors are still relatively reasonable. Are you Silver Dollar on the HAMB, too? -Dave

    vintage toys

Pedal Cars? I am looking for a pedal car or a pedal car kit for my older daughter, who will be three in the fall (I figure if I start looking now, I’ll have one by the time I need it). The going rate is about $250 for an assembled, painted new one, and I figure that’s reasonable (that’s...

    Vintage Workwear

The MotorCities National Historic Area story of the week this week is about a CIO attempt to organize the workers of Newton Steel in Monroe, Michigan in 1937, and the subsequent strike. A couple pictures went along with the story that I thought were relevant to this thread: -Dave

    Watch the Fords go by!

Hey all. A new development that might be of interest to some here: The Ford Barn, long a repository of invaluable knowledge regarding 1928 to 1948 Fords (and quite a few guys who know something about the earlier and later models too), has been acquired by Ryan Cochran at Atomic Industries (the...

What to do with old comic books and popular science magazines.

Old magazines tend to be cut apart for old advertisements these days. I guess I'm okay with that (I have several framed ads myself, but I have never cut up a magazine), but I like to see them scanned in their entirety first. I can remember when '40s and '50s National Geographic magazines...

"Ask the Man Who Owns One"

Are you certain? I thought the 200 Deluxes got cormorants and standard 200s got nothing. -Dave

    San Francisco 1906

At least some of those streetcars have pantographs, so I don't think they're all cable cars. Amazing footage. Amazing to see so many autombiles two years before the Model T was even introduced. Seems America was well on its way to becoming motorized even then. -Dave

    JFK no hatless Jack

I think hats died from the same cause as convertibles, and winter- and summer-weight suits: Climate control. Both in buildings and automobiles. People are indoors way more often than they used to be, and the outside conditions hardly affect them the way they used to, so we’ve gone to generic...

The Stetson St. Regis homburg - what can you tell me?

Wonderful information. I don't suppose anyone has one of those great c. 1945 Stetson ads that features the St. Regis? You know, the ones that talk about what the classy fellow is wearing, and how his outfit isn't complete without the featured Stetson. -Dave

    Golden-Era Hot-Rodding

This just surfaced on the HAMB's May "Banger Meet" (a thread for vintage four-cylinder enthusiasts): I post it because it's rare to see a T-framed hot rod, most builders opt for a Model A frame or a fabricated tube frame if they're not staying with Model T axles and driveline. Since I...

    The Courtship of Andy Hardy

Right, I figure it's something like that. I'm more interested in the design and fonts, etc, rather than the actual words. Photos of period mechanic's wear aren't super common, and I'd like to use it as an example to follow, rather than try to clone it. -Dave

    The Courtship of Andy Hardy

This is cross-posted from the “Classic Workwear” thread, for which I apologize, but it occurs to me that a broader audience for my request might be able to help. I caught part of The Courtship of Andy Hardy last night on TCM. Mickey Rooney is working on a Model A at one point, and is wearing...

    Reproduction classic workwear

I caught part of The Courtship of Andy Hardy last night on TCM. Mickey Rooney is working on a Model A at one point, and is wearing a Jughead-style felt beanie and light-colored overalls with the garage name and address embroidered on the back. At least, I think that’s what’s embroidered on the...
