Perhaps, but in your first photo the (presumably equally cool cats) are doing the same job without the painted jacket. Different strokes, then as now...
The jacket in the Avatar (from The Great Waldo Pepper film) is a buttoned jacket (like an A-1), but with a later collar (like an A-2). I have seen designs for the jacket, but I'm now aware of how closely these are based on any authentic (as opposed to cinematic) jacket.
It's not a design that appeals to me, but the 30s pattern works best with a slender frame (Rudie is a good example) and high waisted trousers as might have been worn in period.
As soon as you start to wear lower slung trousers below the natural waist on the hips then the design is compromised...
Embrace the nerdish side and let the obsessive run free ;-)
JC's naval jackets are a good choice - technically they appear even stronger than the A-2s in some cases.
Platon on VLJF (associated with the BK company) confirms that the newer 'contract' jackets are military sizes (I.e. One size below modern sizes), but the 'house' A-2 is tagged as size (modern size), but this will in time revert to mil. spec. size in time for consistency.
When you're paying the sums involved at the top end, I'll happily put my hand up and join the obsessives...
The Good Wear Leather jackets do not disappoint in the flesh - I've owned several and they are simply the best in the marketplace. I have a Doniger A-2 (a goatskin) on order now and they...
Yes, fair comment. I appreciate the strong loyalty for their jackets on FL, but there are better choices than Aero for cost/accuracy in the A-2 market IMHO.
If you're contemplating spending anything like that amount for an Aero, you'd be better advised to go for a Good Wear and have the best repro A-2 money can buy.
You might find it useful to look a little further afield for information (VLJF) on the most recent developments with BK - there is less current material on FL.
All I'm going to say is that this 'Kalifornian, dippy hippy fashion' has a lot to answer for - what next? Trousers hanging below the butt (as our colonial cousins say)?!
