With regards to the A-1s , anyone have an idea if these were leather or other material ?
They seem to be very soft almost like sweaters !
The issued A-1 is capeskin, which drapes very well. Lindy's jacket, which is a private purchase jacket lacking some features of the A-1 looks like cape...
You're the best judge, but I don't agree: your 40 fits you well (trim, military fit), the 36 bunches too much at the belt causing the upper torso to flare out and give you an additional roll of leather above the belt.
I have the same problem with an AN-J-3 that I have (tagged 40). I typically...
Time for Polymer Chemistry 101... ;-)

The horsehide 16175-P varied from a lighter caramel coloured horsehide through to a darker russet (I've owned the former, but have seen images of the latter).
The seal jackets are generally the results of...
It's a lovely jacket - I passed on a 42 to my son (to grow into) as it was too snug for me; I'd need a 44.
The quality of workmanship was superb...and it had cost me £30 so I was doubly chuffed.
I am offering for sale my David D Doniger/McGregor Sportswear AN-J-3.
This is a civilian example of the short-lived attempt to address the flight jacket needs of both the army and navy - consequently it has some elements of both the A-2 and later naval jackets (e.g. the AN-J-3A or M-422A)...
