    Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

It's a pleasure and belated congratulations on your Medal! I had assumed that you were a non-native speaker when you were talking about difficulties communicating in London. I have found that Americans quite often use words and phrases - both written and spoken - that sound charmingly...

Aldershot would make sense because it's an Army town. There's also Victoria Camping and Surplus - used to be near Victoria Station but now at The Cut, near Waterloo. Very nice chap there called Howard. And of course Outdoor Knitwear (www.outdoorknitwear.com) which has been mentioned in this thread.

You certainly write excellent English. In general, foreign-born residents of London - and indeed England as a whole - speak better and clearer English than the majority of English people: the current education system and political culture regard sloppy English as 'equal' and criticism of it as...

There's something curiously comforting about wearing a very old sweater even with a few holes - but not as big a hole as that one! My sub sweater from Silvermans is quite ancient I have to say and needs darning in a couple of places.

You sound like a late developer as far as the jumpers are concerned but happily you've made up for it and wool seems to be back in fashion anyway. We also had windows open in the dormitories (or windows that didn't close properly) but it wasn't as bad as your experience because we were able to...

... And did that lead you to get one yourself? I don't think you can have 'too many' jumpers of this type. I also have vintage Nordic jumpers as well as many Guernseys and submariners roll necks. As far as woolly pullies are concerned, as I said my first one was aged 11 but I really got into...

How did your (very sensible) interest in military jumpers start? For me it began as a schoolboy interested in the Armed Forces. I got my first Army Woolly Pully aged 11 and my interest just grew from there.

Obviously we share the same sensible taste in woollies. I have a white sub sweater from Silverman's that has lasted for years: I look forward to the change of seasons so I can wear it again! Do you have any of the woolly pullies that have been discussed widely in this thread?

Bridgedale I remember as a manufacturer of Woolly Pullies back in the 70s, a bit like Outdoor Knitwear today. They also made wool hiking socks.

May I ask out of interest why this particular sweater?

Yes, I think that's like the one I had many years ago. I shall have a look for one - I wouldn't mind one myself as I am such an aficionado of military sweaters.

Have you a photo of the Jersey? I don't think you mean the kind of Woolly Pully we're discussing on this thread. However I'm not completely clear whether you mean the wool roll neck or whether it is a thinner wool crew neck RN sweater: I had one of those many years ago as a teenager.

Very much a day when a cricket match would be rained off, but the sweaters would be worn for tea and toast.

It's too warm and humid now but this morning it was cool enough for my patchless Navy WP for a few hours.

I've been enjoying the continuation of the cool weather because it means that I can continue to wear my Woolly Pullies for longer than expected! Other fans of the WP have told me the same thing.
