How does it feel when you sit down in it buttoned up Dave?
I'd be more worried about the stress point on that lower button than the looks.
You have some leather there to "roll" & shorter there may pull on that button a bit more...JMHO
Slouch hat was around in the Civil War period = civilian hats turned into military use.
There are stories of soldiers knocking hats off of civilians heads with tree limbs as they stuck their heads out of trains to see the troops.
These hats then volunteered for military service with the...
This is a good option. I have it on a cutdown Resistol that I shaped more Outback style (I made the one in the photo)....

Yep, older ones had bound edges where new model has raw edge & much wider brim.
Mine has a belt like hatband, not the braided type. Crowns look the same

Wore them for years hiking with my son's BSA troop. Wouldn't do what I did to them to a decent felt hat ever.
Still have 1 in the beater stack & an official BSA wool crusher that I wear to District meetings.
Be Prepared....
Most definitely. My first HD was a 1978 FLH that I restored to ride while riding my 1970 Triumph T100.
After getting my RKC, I'd ride the FLH to keep the battery charged & oil flowing after getting back from long rides. Sorry for the side track...
From the Twin Cam 88 to the Shovelhead 1200 was...
I got a Sovereign grade Stetson Road Master a while back. That felt was much better than the modern HatCo Stetson Stratoliner, which was Royal Stetson grade. I liked that sweatband better too but the liner was still glued in place & nothing special. Ribbon work seemed to be done better as well...
I ride a 1979 Honda CB750, 1982 Suzuki GS1100ez & 2000 Harley Road King Classic.
Cafe Racer jacket with all 3, full face helmet on the older scoots & skid lid on the RKC; they don't have windshields.
I wear chaps on the Harley & Kevlar lined jeans on the other 2.
Never cared for the Perfecto...
I've made a couple out of oak saplings that I have found with vines making corkscrew turns.
Strong endorser of trekking poles or a good hiking staff like yours. We are having more bear sightings than ever before!
Campdrafts are good trail mates as well....
I'm a 7 5/8 & had to shorten some of these style hat cords to not hang over my brim...

Not so much damage the hat as stain your fingers with powder residue...especially the darker hues.
I reviewed a Caribou modern HatCo Stetson Stratoliner. Just handling the hat out of the box had my fingers bluish.
Sometimes the quality issues are on the tips of your fingers after handling the hat & right in front of your eyes as you see the stitches staring at you from below the ribbon treatment.
That is a nice hat anyway you look at it. Akubra doesn't make Fed3's anymore plus it looks good on you.
Now the question to ask yourself is, would I wear this hat if I had a true "Indy" hat?
It never will be an "Indy" hat due to the brim as you stated but is it close enough or will you...
