Bottom line is any one of them will fit if ordered correctly. Make it easy on yourself! Call Gibson & Barnes. Great customer service, and great jackets. Absolutely love my A-2. Can you spend more money? Of course. But you have reached the point of diminishing returns.
My G&B Civil A-2 is a 42R...
alsendk...so glad to hear the jacket meets your expectations! I bought a steamer to help get the wrinkles out. Yes, they do fit just a bit on the small side. Even though it is a Large, fits more like a Medium. Great jacket. In pictures, it always looks dark blue, instead of black...go figure...
Just flew a trip with another pilot whose father was a B-17 pilot in WWII. He said they have pictures of his dad after returning from a mission where his shirt would be soaked with sweat from the armpits down. Even thought the OAT was -50 F, the atmosphere was hot 'n heavy on the inside.
The first thing I noticed after coming home was that, picking up my Alpha B-15 off the hanger, it was immediately obvious that the MA-1 was nearly twice as heavy. My B-15 weighs next to nothing by comparison.
Just spoke with Alpha. The jackets in Deutschland are not the same as here. She said the quality would be the same as they have to meet certain standards to sell an Alpha product. Did not know the country of origin, but the jackets sold here all come from China.
The lady, who was very nice, did...
Slim vs. Blousy? I think "tailored" would be the appropriate nomenclature for the subject at hand. I like a jacket when it looks like it was custom tailored for the individual. A 40R, or a 42R, off the rack, most often will do this for me.
Well, that sums it up for me. My leather jackets (4), all chrome tanned, look good, have absolutely zero odor (other than a very natural and pleasing leather aroma), and are wearing quite well. Two of the jackets are well over 10 years old (Chinese origin) and get wadded up in suitcases weekly...
I am going to call Alpha Industries this week to inquire about these jackets sold in other countries, specifically if they are all the same, or made to different specs.
Before I would spend over $200 on an Alpha MA-1, the nice folks at G&B can make one for almost half that.
Yes, the ones tried on in Deutschland did run on the generous side, with medium size being a good fit, and the large being, well LARGE!
Where was your jacket manufactured?
One more observation - these Alpha's were all completely free of wrinkles. Could this be due to the extra heavy satin fabric? It looks like these jackets are wrinkle resistant, unlike the ones seen in the US.
The store clerk said these jackets were of USA origin. Do not think that can be correct.
Well...good question! The A-2, G-1 and B-15 in my closet are all very nice. Had an MA-1 in the past, so thought it would be nice to have another one, especially a warm one like these. I would buy one here on the spot, but not for $202. They can be bought for less than half that back home. But...
No, as $202 seems a bit high. I would rather put that money into a G&B leather jacket...but the Alpha MA-1 and CWU 45/P are extremely nice. Just wonder where they are made? Perhaps these are Chinese in origin and a similar one can be bought for less than $100 in the USA.
Alpha revisited..size DOES matter!
Enjoying some great German beer and brats here in Frankfurt! Went to the NATO Store to try on (again) some Alpha jackets.
The MA-1 in a size (M) was larger than my Knoxville made B-15, which is a size (L). The large MA-1 was VERY generous in size!
