The $40 Dobbs Rancher was a special level hat like the Stetson 7X or others Beaver 50. It was introduced around 1951 or so....and for the same $40. So western version of a Dobbs Forty....
Yes, I was starting to think this too. A Jobbers tag. Explains the plain white and the fact it is upside down. While the owner knows his own size...the blocker does need to know the original size after cleaning...especially if the blocking tags and the size tag are missing........
It is a felted edge that Stetson would a few years later call a "Mode Edge". Part of the reason for their price and being "Deluxe".
PS: As an aside, the second incarnation of the "Whippet" came with a felted edge too....which they described at its introduction as a "Tailored Edge" and again...

Stockman-Farmer Spring and Summer 1937 finds the same two hats as above listed under an offering of three DELUXE STETSONS :rolleyes: in 1937! Note the "CLEAR NUTRIA" being one of the "Deluxe".........
Among the other listings almost all are No. 1 Quality with a couple of Standard Quality and...
In the Spring-Summer 1940 Miller Stockman Catalog, we find only one :eek: (YES, Just ONE,1) 3x Beaver Stetson hat.......(most all were No. 1 Quality with a couple of Standard Quality and Excellent Quality thrown in)!!!!
EDIT: By the Special Edition Winter Catalog they have TWO (2) 3X Beaver...
