Comparison of Type A-1 jackets (GW and ELC .50 Cal)

I received a length of knit material (and matching thread) at cost from Alan at ELC yesterday - great service. I've taken a pattern from the Good Wear collar knit and will get started on the replacement for the ELC (which will be stitched in by hand). The combination will be perfect. There are...

    Aero A-1

I've owned 4 A-1s from ELC and 5 from Good Wear (and seen or handled offerings from most of the other manufacturers). The .50 cal that I posted previously and is linked above is simply the most convincing repro Type A-1 that I have ever seen. The time worn treatment of this cape is superb.

To bi-swing back or not to bi-swing back?

Yes, there's a world of difference between the construction of a true biswing ('action') back and a simple jacket with gussets.

To bi-swing back or not to bi-swing back?

It works well on my Gordon & Ferguson M-422A - extremely comfortable. Although strictly speaking, I prefer the cleaner lines of my Type A-1 and Menlo Cossack, despite the likelihood of the sleeves binding in some situations.

But honestly Scott, where would you have put it?

    Cafe Racer vs. A-2

Ah...live a little Scott - stand out and be damned, I say.

    Himel Brothers Leather

Pretty much the same thing, to all intents and purposes Joel. It's probably sheepskin - although the one that I've seen is sturdier than shearling. I don't imagine that 'cape sheep' are that much in evidence these days

    Himel Brothers Leather

Thanks, John Lever gave me the heads up and I couldn't resist the BIN. I should get it on Tuesday. Might need the sleeves tailored a touch, but I have an excellent local leather tailor who repairs/modifies MC leathers - excellent work and very reasonable.

    Himel Brothers Leather

Very nice - I do like the '30s look. Way above what I'd feel comfortable paying though, so I picked up a great LVC Menlo Cossack yesterday on EBay for just over £300. It's a dark brown capeskin and will complement my ELC as a daily work jacket.

    Who Makes the Best M-422A?

Gordon & Ferguson The repros don't quite do this one justice.

    Cafe Racer vs. A-2

If the fabric gets too tatty (and tatty is fine), then it's easily replaced.

    Cafe Racer vs. A-2

    +1

    Cafe Racer vs. A-2

Yup, got to agree with that - an A-2 might look out of place on non military personnel to some, but a bike jacket without a bike looks equally incongruous to me. Personally, I prefer to go with an A-1 in any case...

    Cafe Racer vs. A-2

I've not worn a cafe racer so can't comment on that other than in aesthetic terms. The cafe racer will work on a very trim frame but not IMO if you're carrying excess weight around the middle. I've owned a GW Doniger and it's a very comfortable A-2 in terms of length (they're often too short as...
