With due respect to custom hatters, and members of this forum not withstanding, I wouldn't necessarily say that there's going to be a huge overlap between their customers and Hatco. Custom hats seem to be something that most folks "graduate" to, for lack of a better word.
Goorin cut...
Yeah, I thought LBJ was Resistol...Jim Leavelle, the guy who was escorting Oswald when Jack Ruby shot him, was wearing a Resistol, it's at the Sixth Floor museum.
Fun read though, glad to see Hatco making that commitment to improving quality.
Big ol' box came today:
Big hat! Special edition Stetson Boss Raw Edge from JJ Hat Center in undyed "natura" felt. 4" brim with kettle curl. It came to me creased, so I don't know the open crown height, but it's at least 6". Wide 2" ribbon with fray. Also has a nice 2" leather...
I don't think that's necessarily a hole. It looks like it might just be an irregularity in the weave. But if it were a hole, I don't think there is an actual satisfactory answer to your question. It might have had a price tag attached to the brim at some point?
Well, this should be interesting.
Unfortunately they sold the last size 7 even though they had it online. They're going to send me the 57 with some sizing tape, and said I'm free to return it if it doesn't work.
Considering that the last Stetson I got from DelMonico was sized small, and I...
Will do! My brims keep getting bigger, and I blame you! ;)
That thought hat occurred to me too. It's not as if 70's and 80's Stetsons were anything to write home about. Though it is an undyed felt apparently, so no powder dye.
Yeah, you gotta apply that code at checkout.
...and now I'm waiting on Boss Raw Edge.
I've been pining over that hat for so long, and this is supposedly "vintage" undyed felt. Deckard calls it the 1800's reissue on instagram...since its special edition for the 150th, plus 30% off, I'd have...
Well, the neat thing about getting a hat from Art, is that he has his own conformers. Of course if you care to go in person, that's always a better experience. But that conformer is real nifty and ensures a perfect fit. He can also make you a band block, which is cut to your actual headshape...
I've never seen a hat from NW hats or Falcon Park in person.*
That having been said, you're gonna have a tough time persuading me that there's many better hatters than Bob or Art. Both gentlemen have a deep appreciation for fine hats. Art has a particularly fine stash of ribbon and his bows...
....I'm not seeing that in any of the pictures.
What's your frame of reference for a strong flange?
Let me put it this way, I worked the edges of the brim on my fed for months to make it look more flanged.
That's MORE curled than an off the rack Fed because I made it that way.
That's the way the hat looks now. Look at the screen captures, the brim does not swoop down in the style of an Aussie hat:
It still has a pretty defined flange on the brim.
