That's Paul's Hat Works here in SF. The ladies there have done some work on a few of my lids.
But that was a great video that I hadn't seen before, and very much enjoyed! Thanks for sharing!
The super condensed version of the Borsalino story is that they haven't been the same since they moved from the original factory in the 80's. Modern borsos are "nice," but the vintage ones are generally higher quality.
Well, for instance, I got this Playboy off ebay:
It's got a wonky bash (and I do mean "bash" as opposed to "crease"), a few weak spots in the felt, some light stains here and there. It's a great "aged" hat.
Except I don't have any stories to go with it.
I mean, I appreciate that...
Yeah, the Fender "road worn" series was a big hullabaloo on the Fender Discussion Page, which I was active on at the time. I get the appeal, I particularly like a neck with a "relic" finish.
I don't really have a problem conceptually with pre distressed goods. Denim has been sold that way...
Ironically, the inside tag is one of the more helpful elements. In any event, from the black sweatband and the general proportions, my inclination is to say 60's. The picture of the liner is a little blurry, but does it say Byer Rolnick on it?
VS Playboy in black cherry lightweight felt (suede finish):
Agree with David's comments on both counts, heck, get two band blocks. The lightweight felt really is something else, especially in Art's hands. It's a really nice, moldable felt.
I think sometimes folks get befuddled when there's not a quick and easy answer to their questions. There's not an "off the rack" hat for a lot of "recommend me a hat" type threads.
Northwest is a good option. Also, sometimes you get lucky on EBay.
That's a Borso Torino, which is smaller all around than Bogey's but gives a similar look.
"good one" is all relative.
How much money are you willing to spend? Akubra makes "good" fedoras. Hatco makes "good" fedoras.
A vintage hat is most likely going to be of a higher quality. But there's legwork you have to do.
