There are no biological differences between 'races' whereas there are strong biological differences between male and female. Therefore Rachel Dolzeal's claims are in some ways less outlandish than those of a woman claiming to 'be' a man or a man claiming to 'be' a woman. It's just that one is...
I also think that the conflation of gay men and lesbians - again by activists not 'real' people living from day to day - causes problems. The two 'groups' (if we have to define people in group terms) have very little in common culturally or socially.
I really am sceptical about the whole thing. There is a rich tradition of female impersonation - as in La Cage Aux Folles - but that is not actually claiming to 'be' female. It involves acting and using the imagination. I can't say that I really believe a man can genuinely 'become' a woman or...
This came up on another thread, but having had to play Rugger through my A Level year, often on Saturdays as well as weekdays, I marvel that I managed to get any work done at that time! But being in the House team gave me a certain degree of status (meaningless) that I wouldn't have had...
I seem to have been luckier than some of the other men who have commented on this because I never had any problem with the changing rooms (locker rooms in US English) or communal showers. It was simply something we did after games throughout my schooldays and I don't recall any embarrassment...
An attendant problem to this is that many 'trans' activists seem to be demanding the right to 'self-definition' so that they don't have to go through a medical process. They seem to be backed by a large section of the political class, despite the implications for privacy and personal space for...
When I lived in North London I often enjoyed swimming in the Men's Pond at Highgate. Now I live South of the River it's too far away. There are three ponds, one all-male, one all-female and the other mixed. It's a system that works really well. Now, in its (non)wisdom, the Corporation of...
Saw it in 1984 when I was spending a month in San Francisco, starring Keith Michell. We went backstage afterwards because one of my friends knew him. He showed me pictures of himself with his wife and daughters riding the Berkshire countryside, which seemed incongruous after Albin.
In the Leni Riefenstahl movie, I can only remember the young men, for some reason, and they were definitely in a single-sex group. They were mostly around college student age if I remember. It's a strange, disturbing film but fascinating as a historical document.
Gender neutral Nazis - now that...
I warn you - they are addictive and I say this after decades of wearing them and having a ridiculous number, all of which I enjoy: they keep me warm, I like the military associations very much and I love the ribbed wool, patches and turn-back cuffs..
Blue-grey is Air Force. You're making me tempted to get it in v-neck, which will mean I have 4 WPs in that colour!
Mr Delbert is famous! I've just joined his mailing list. He comes from Arizona but he's now based in New Mexico.
Re. the Caribbean link: I was probably thinking of Dexter Gordon...
Delbert Gordon? That sounds so like a Caribbean name and yet he's a Navajo. I like the other ring very much as well. I'll look up Mr Delbert (great name for a Calypso singer).
Getting back to the Woolly Pully, what I really meant to ask is whether it is dark blue or light blue/blue grey?
Looking at it again I think it's Air Force blue: I have three WPs in that colour, one with epps and pen holder, one just standard with patches on the elbows and shoulders, one without patches (which I asked Outdoor Knitwear to make specially for me!).
I've had a few v-necks over the years and still have the Navy one (am thinking of getting the Army version) but my (vast) collection is almost entirely crew necks. The buttons on your epps suggest that the sweater is quite a few years old. Is it Navy or Air Force blue? It's quite hard to see...
Following on from this and your earlier message about British prices and postal costs, I would say that Mr Fading Fast's RAF sweater is identical to mine and so the Guideboat option would be the best for you. ... North Sea are having a sale and I am tempted by their Navy version of the roll neck...
Yes - I have everything on your list! It's a shame about the corduroy trousers ('pants' to you in the States) as they would nicely complement your outfit.
I'm wearing my RAF Woolly Pully today and will wear the Derby Tweed tomorrow - with corduroy trousers! My Derby Tweed is the straightforward...
I have been very happy with the one I bought from Silverman’s many many years ago. They still issue it and Outdoor Knitwear do a similar version. I can vouch for both but do not know about the WPG model.
As I think I've mentioned before, the Peat Brown WP with suede patches is much longer in body length than the standard Woolly Pully jumper (aka commando sweater). The intention is, apparently, to offer greater protection to sportsmen engaged in shooting, etc. In practical terms it means that at...
