I'm with Steve in that I don't care for WAR's or velours but don't doubt that quality is there & exceptional too.
Again, if the powers that be didn't "standardize" the X system on even beaver content back when hats were at their peak, why would any other quantifiable standard get developed...
For true, but for a quantifiable quality standard to be developed, vetted, accepted, etc., somebody has to invest serious time, effort & money...have not seen such a benefactor grace the Lounge since I've been a patron...
My stance is if it could be quantified, it would've already been done by now since the felt hat industry's heyday would've addressed it...JMHO

You are looking for a quantifier for something that is not easily quantifiable.
There are lots of posts on this topic but 1 point is undeniable, modern felt production does not & cannot produce the same type of end products the old methods did. It is just not economical. The economies of scale are not there anymore. In the vintage days, felters & hatter could let the felt...
Generally speaking, beaver fur fibers felt tighter than rabbit due to the physical structure of the fur fiber. They have more "barbs" so they lock together tighter, making the resulting felt more durable & water resistant....
I know Winchester made some special order true, undyed, pure belly fur felt bodies for a Western hatter, VERY nice!
Optimo sources their bodies from Fepsa Felt. I assume other hatters can source those pure belly fur felt bodies as well.
