Mike, Ellipse calculator comes up with 22.885 perimeter. Not sure what the divide by 2 factor is in circumference but Alan said to add the 2 measurements, not multiply, to get size... 7 1/4
I'm a LO & close to an XLO. New Premiere Strat is soft enough to conform to my oblong noggin & my 7 5/8 size seems to run a touch large. New felt with new sweatband typically tighten up with wearing.
I like how they had the inserts upside down in the one photo...
As far as the "mold" goes, depends on how it penetrated the felt fibers. Looks nasty for sure & to have gone all the way thru the brim. For that money with complete case, it is worth a shot at stain removal...
Get a steam iron & a white handkerchief. Iron with a good bit of steam with handkerchief between felt & iron.
The steam with "reactivate" the shellac & the pressing will firm up the felt some.
When cooled, the brim should be firmer.
Not sure if Stratton has ever considered the need to soften the brim. They are made to specs that demand that stiffness.
Miller Hats used to sell a campaign hat with a shaped brim but never seen a Stratton that way.

Dynafelt is a mixture of rabbit fur & wool that is treated with water repellent.
Good serviceable felt, a notch above wool, IMHO. Welcome to the Lounge...
Not really "a good beginners hat" but just a great Open Road style hat for around $100... totally worth the wait.
Beaters on ebay are competitive for your size range.
Frank James: You ever been in love?
Clell Miller: Oh God, yes. It was terrible. An affliction. Really miserable. Nothing but trouble. Drove me crazy.
Frank James: That bad? Really?
Clell Miller: Yes. She was wonderful.
